Pinterest has been tracking what's taking off on their platform year after year, and they've gotten pretty good at predicting what's next.

Over the past six years, their predictions have been spot-on 88 per cent of the time. And here's the interesting bit: while Gen Z is driving two-thirds of the trends for 2026, these aren't just "young people things"—they're crossing generations.

In 2026, consumers will be seeking comfort, authenticity, and optimism to quiet the constant noise of the world and social media, according to Pinterest Predicts.

So what's actually coming? Here are the five major home decor trends Pinterest and our experts predict will dominate this year.

Trend 1. "Fun Haus" and lots of stripes.

Big top energy is coming to your living room. Pinterest is calling it "Fun Haus" — circus-inspired home decor that's about to have a major moment in 2026, led by (surprise!) Boomers and Millennials.

They're seeing searches for "striped ceiling" up 40 per cent, "circus nursery" up 50 per cent, and "circus interior" skyrocketing by 130 per cent.

Nicholas Holmes, Kmart Buyer, told Mamamia that "stripes are a trend that shows no signs of slowing down for the home, and they'll continue to be huge for 2026."

"They offer the perfect balance between classic and contemporary styles and are so versatile and easy to mix and match, pairing well with almost anything, which makes them ideal for layering."

So yes, we're talking bold stripes, sculptural silhouettes and just a wink of clownish charm.

Pinterest notes that "vintage circus aesthetic" searches have jumped 70 per cent, while "circus art" is up 35 per cent.

Holmes adds that "stripes suit every setting, from relaxed coastal to modern urban and everything in between."

The verdict? Your home is about to join the circus—in the chicest way possible.

Trend 2. Chrome homewares, furniture and… everything.

If you thought chrome was just for your bathroom taps, think again. This shiny metallic finish is having a major moment.

"Chrome is a huge trend this season, and a great way to add modern updates to your home," Holmes said.

"Chrome accents can be used subtly or as a statement. Chrome adds a sleek, reflective quality that elevates everyday decor.

When paired with colour and texture, chrome adds harmony and polish, tying the whole space together with ease."

Whether you're going subtle with chrome picture frames and cabinet handles, or making a statement with chrome furniture legs and lighting fixtures, this trend is all about that sleek, reflective finish that makes everything feel a bit more polished and modern.

Trend 3. A global influence.

Next up: a beautiful fusion of African and bohemian styles that's being driven by Boomers and Gen X.

Pinterest is seeing "afrobohemian home decor" searches surge by 220 per cent, with "adire fabric" up 130 per cent and "motif berbere" up 210 per cent.

Searches for "african boho living room" and "afro chic home decor" are trending up—a sign that decor is going to Dakar and beyond, according to Pinterest.

Think colourful Nigerian textiles and Ethiopian wall art (up 50%) alongside handwoven baskets and natural fibre rugs.

"Bamboo beaded curtains" are up 60 per cent and "rattan accent chair" searches have climbed 50 per cent.

This style is all about celebrating rich cultural heritage while keeping that relaxed, bohemian vibe we love.

Trend 4. Colour stacking.

Interior designer Georgia Duncan from Studio Georg told Mamamia that while Cloud Dancer might suggest we're all going back to boring white walls, she's not buying it.

"I am still a firm believer in more is more, less is a bore, but is the cloud dancer going to bring back some more refined minimalism?" she wonders.

Her approach? Use white as your starting point, then go wild.

"I think white is a very good colour to use as base. You can use white as a base but it can still be warm and fun. Adding layers, textures, a bit of colour creates a home (remember a house is not a home - it takes time, layers, love)."

Duncan recently decorated her daughter's nursery room using what she calls pattern on colour on texture. The key, according to Duncan, is layering.

"We will want a home full of texture, warmth and even some playfulness! In terms of object homewares, I think we'll see colour stacking."

"Drenching is cool, and still it, but stacking now. Think a base of white (thanks, Pantone) with heavy textures, colours and tones."

Trend 5. Neo deco.

Remember Art Deco? Well, it's back—but make it 2026.

After years of heavy minimalism, Gen X and Millennials are bringing this retro aesthetic back with a vengeance. Tied into the chrome prediction from Kmart buyer Holmes.

The numbers don't lie: "Antique bar cart" searches are up 100 per cent, "red marble bathroom" has jumped 80 per cent, and "pendant lamp" is up 40 per cent.

Pinterest describes the look as bold, glam—and just a touch eccentric, featuring crisp chevrons, fan arches and other geometric hits, all edged in chrome or brass.

Translation: It's time to channel your inner Great Gatsby, but with a modern twist.

So there you have it; 2026 is shaping up to be the year we collectively decide that boring minimalism can take a back seat.

Whether you're adding circus stripes to your ceiling (yes, really), bringing in African textiles, or going full Art Deco glamour with chrome accents, the message is clear: personality is back.

As Georgia Duncan puts it: more is more, less is a bore. And honestly? After years of beige everything, we're here for it.
