Ever heard the saying 'three is a trend'?

According to my colleagues and I (and maybe you, too), hayfever is hitting us hard right now.

The other morning, a bunch of us — myself included — entered the office sniffling, sneezing, scratching and basically sobbing, bemoaning our windy, pollen-fuelled commutes.

Watch: The chemist-brand body product that's an itchy skin saviour. Post continues below.

Not to be dramatic, but I find I'm my least attractive during spring and summer.

While some reckon their skin improves as the weather warms up, mine seems to lose its shit every year like clockwork.

Think: Red, runny eyes. Perioral dermatitis flare ups. Flaky nose from sneezing. Random redness and dry patches.

Other than antihistamines (follow the usage instructions, take as per your doc's advice etc.), I wanted to share a few of my beauty strategies and product switches I use to troubleshoot the above.

1. Switch to a tubing mascara.

Tubing mascara > regular mascara always, but especially when you're prone to a weepy eye.

My current favourites are MERIT's Clean Lash Mascara and Loungeface Lash, but Holme Beauty's Loyal Lash Mascara and the Revlon All In Tubing Mascara come highly recommended from our beauty writer and self-acclaimed hooded eye expert Teresa McNamara.

2. Pimple patches.

Get random itchy or red spots like me?

Whack a hydrocolloid pimple patch on top to help reduce inflammation, but mostly to keep your dirty mitts from touching your face!

COSRX Acne Pimple Master Patch are my favourite, but any plain pimple patch with work (stay away from micro-dart or salicylic acid pimple patches for this purpose).

3. Body products for itchy skin.

I always switch to a fragrance-free shower oil around this time of year to add extra nourishment to dry, itchy skin.

As much as I love my sensorial shower products, I stick to more fuss-free formulas like Bioderma Atoderm Ultra-Nourishing Shower Oil Cleanser when my skin is irritated.

Great minds think alike, because You Beauty co-host and fellow itchy lady Kelly McCarren also rates the brand's Anti-Itching Ultra-Soothing SOS Spray — I 100 per cent checking this out when I'm next at the chemist.

4. Add in at-home LED.

The ultimate jumpscare. Image: Supplied.

Do I honestly wear my Current Body LED mask as often as I should? Nope. But you know when I do use it consistently? When hayfever skin strikes.

Red light therapy is proven to help reduce inflammation in the skin; an at-home device won't deliver the same results as an in-clinic LED session, though.

If you're thinking of buying an at-home LED mask, look into the wavelength and irradiance numbers before investing as these will determine how effective the device will be.

Side note - You can read our chat with a cosmetic doctor about which at-home LED devices are up to scratch here.

5. Exfoliation for sensitised skin.

I rely on ultra-gentle exfoliation to help with dry patches, without irritating my barrier.

I use Alpha-H's Illuminating Enzyme Polish in the shower a few nights a week (it's a powder you emulsify into a soft lather with water) or a non-acid exfoliating serum like Skinceuticals Retexturing Activator.

6. Eye drops, nasal spray and… nappy rash cream?

Hayfever holy trinity. Image: Supplied.

Hold on; this is where things get really sexy. But I don't do spring and summer without these on hand.

First, a non-medicated saline nasal spray keeps your nostrils nice and moist, which can help with that unbearable itchy feeling.

Secondly, when I add eye drops to my morning skincare routine, I wonder why I don't do it every day.

Are they annoying to use? Always. But I personally find it makes a huge difference in how my eyes are able to cope.

And finally, Amolin Nappy Rash Cream is my go-to for cracked skin, dry bits, thigh chafe, an itchy nose — whack a bit of this on anything!

7. A dermal therapist-approved sensitive skin hack.

A dermal therapist taught me this tip when I was having regular treatments leading up to my wedding.

I was super worried about my perioral dermatitis flaring up; this hack is great because it removes the fear around seasonal perioral dermatitis recurrence.

After cleansing, I apply a light layer of a plain moisturiser (Avène Tolerance Control Soothing Skin Recovery Cream in the morning, La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume at night) all around my nose, chin and lips before going in with any serums or treatments.

This allows me to keep using my active products like a vitamin C serum or a gentle retinol treatment.
