WARNING: SPOILERS. Turn back now unless you want to find out what happened at the end of the (infuriating) finale of The Handmaid’s Tale Season Two.
Now that they’re (^^) gone, can we please vent about the trauma we all experienced on Thursday night?
To recap in case your brain is still foggy from the shock…
What happened at the end of The Handmaid’s Tale finale?
As chaos ensues in Gilead – houses are burning, cars torched – several Marthas, spearheaded by Rita, help June and her baby, Holly, flee from the Waterfords’ home, through backyards, to a deserted tunnel. A car pulls up. Ofglen/Emily’s new Commander (who turns out to be a less sadistic prick than most) has aided in an operation to help the women and child escape.
Yet when it comes time to climb into the truck that will deliver them out of Gilead, to freedom, June does something that had thousands of viewers screaming at their televisions: she hands the baby to Emily.
“Call her Nicole,” she says, referring to the name the Waterfords had given the child. “Tell her I love her.”
Then she shuts the door, and watches as they drive away.
Viewers – how did most put it? – “couldn’t deal”. Social media erupted with shocked and angry reactions, including several vows to never watch The Handmaid’s Tale again.
Me, final few minutes of the #HandmaidsTalefinale: “JUNE. Get in the truck, June. June. JUNE. Get in the…JUNE. Don’t you dare. Don’t…DON’T. June, get in the…DAMMIT JUNE.” <Fin> @HandmaidsOnHulu
