Radio prank calls usually end with swearing, shouting or sudden dial-tone. But Hamish and Andy‘s latest on-air stunt accidentally ended up unearthing Australia’s nicest bloke.
The Hit Network hosts decided to phone a random number to see if the person on the other end would be willing to vouch for a complete stranger.
Posing as ‘Tim Barnard’, a job-seeking accountant in desperate need of a last-minute reference, Hamish dialled the mystery digits and an absolute champion named James answered.
“Yeah sweet, I’ll just say I know you from way back,” said James. “I’ll say you’re a ripper bloke. I’ve got you covered.”
And he did.
When Andy called back about 10 minutes later pretending to be ‘Tim’s’ potential new employer, James gave his newest mate a rave review: “What you see is pretty much what you get with him, he’s a go-getter and when he says that things are going to be done, they get done.”
James even spun a whole backstory about meeting Tim through a footy club 10 years ago, where the reliable accountant would often help out with fundraisers and use his expertise to help out the treasurer.
When the whole thing was exposed, James – being the dead set legend that he is – said: “You know, I was actually thinking, ‘How am I going to get in touch with Tim to tell him that I’ve done such a good job for him.’ Bloody hell!”
The Random Job Reference prank has since gone viral, with over 4.7 million views on Facebook and over 174,000 likes.
Along with being an excellent referee, it turns out James is also an awesome sport.
“I was just trying my hardest to back up this Tim bloke,” the electrician told The Sydney Morning Herald.
“I’d committed to it and I thought ‘I’m going to go through with this and give it a good old shake’ and they stitched me up a beauty.”
As for being dubbed ‘the best Aussie’, he’ll take it.
“I love the tag and I’ll be trying to milk it for all it’s worth,” he told The Sydney Morning Herald. “I told mum but mum doesn’t agree with it but I’m hoping she’ll come round.”
