friendship

These viral videos have nailed the unspoken rules of the sacred girlie group chat.

It's not often that I watch a string of TikToks where I feel like someone has peeked into my own life and stolen ideas from me.

But in the case of Sydney Robinson, she has taken TikTok by storm with her video series of a fictionalised group chat drama. And woah, these are so bang on.

It's not a huge surprise that the 27-year-old is a showrunner, director, writer and cinematographer as the story she's crafted is a modern masterpiece.

Sydney uploaded the first video on March 30, and her relatable scenarios have resonated deeply with viewers, catapulting every video in the series to viral status.

The first scene is simple but oh-so-damn-effective: a bunch of gals in a friendship group are heading to a catch-up dinner when one girl throws a spanner in the works. The conflict begins when Hailey messages the group: "I know we weren't going to do boyfriends, but Justin had a really rough day and I don't want to leave him alone."

I'd hazard a guess that there are two kinds of responses to this message: blind rage or blissful ignorance. Because there are two kinds of women: those who believe girly catch-ups are not a place for boyfriends, and those who think their boyfriend (or husband) is invited to everything.

I land firmly in column A and back in the TikTok series, a side chat starts between two friends, who are left furious but agree they will 'wait for Jessica to respond' to Hayley.

Every group chat has/needs a Jessica, the type of no-nonsense person who voices the concerns of the wider group.

As the more outspoken person in the group chat, Jessica bluntly tells Hailey, "I just checked with the restaurant and I am unable to change the reservation to add a seat for him." Shots fired!

To this, the others in the side chat exclaim, "Oh my God, I'm obsessed with her." Jessica is a brave soldier.

But Hailey was playing chess while the rest were playing checkers. "I called the restaurant earlier and weirdly enough, they said it wouldn't be an issue," she messaged back. "We're so excited to see you guys!"

She's incorrigible!!

Then just when Hayley almost skirted by on a technicality, Emily entered the chat to say that 'everyone is having a hard time' and she wouldn't feel comfortable speaking freely in front of Justin. Maddie came forward to agree with Emily's sentiments.

That's one rule in the girlie group chat: you've got to have backup.

The first video culminates in Hailey saying she wouldn't be coming (classic!), and the first instalment ended with the original texter getting a message.

Part two revealed that HAYLEY HAD LEFT THE GROUP CHAT.

I'm on the edge of my goddamn seat! I've never felt more alive!

The second part is even more juicy, as one girl speaks on the phone to Hayley about how she thought it was weird that she changed the reservation without talking to the rest of the women (true!), as another discovers the reservation was amended TWO WEEKS AGO to include Justin.

Oh my God. The liesssssss.

I'm not going to spoil what happens from here, but it has more twists and turns than a White Lotus finale (and umm, the series' biggest fan, Charlie Puth, makes a cameo as Justin). You can watch all five instalments here.

The entire group chat series has accumulated 20 million views on TikTok. Those are numbers I can't even comprehend. For scale, The White Lotus finale got 6.2 million viewers in the US.

We've reached out to Sydney for comment on her viral group chat series.

Drama aside, the series' success speaks to just how seen TikTok viewers felt by the group chat dynamics. Because guess what? There is friendship politics at play in every group chat: words have to be chosen carefully as certain people dominate while others decide that silence is power.

Someone leaving the group chat is an act of rebellion — it's the most dramatic gesture a friend can do.

And every group chat has factions that speak on the side; often about the main chat. It's most often pretty harmless. If you're all genuine friends, it's usually just petty snipes on the side. Whether you like it or not, this kind of gossip is what keeps the world turning.

"It's so funny the ways in which being a woman is such a universal experience," Sydney told Today about the response to the series. "And I think having a really close group of girlfriends with very different personalities that are bound to clash, but it doesn't always mean the end of a friendship."

Sydney's video series made it abundantly clear just how delicate the dynamics in these group chats can be, and I know I'll be impatiently awaiting another season.
