Meryl Streep, Charli XCX, and everything we know about The Chronicles of Narnia movie.

Let's be honest: we've all fallen through that magical wardrobe at some point in our lives.

Whether you grew up devouring C.S. Lewis's books under your doona, watching the BBC adaptation with those gloriously dodgy special effects (those wolves though), or sobbing through the 2000s Disney films, The Chronicles of Narnia has been woven into our collective childhood memories for generations.

And now? Fresh off her billion-dollar Barbie blockbuster, our queen Greta Gerwig is officially taking a stab at the fantasy franchise.

Is it dramatic to say we're absolutely beside ourselves with excitement? Maybe. Do we care? Not even slightly.

But let's address the White Witch in the room: will Gerwig reunite with her favourite collaborators Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet for another earth-shattering cinematic journey? Will we see Timmy making an appearance as Mr Tumnus?

Let's dive into everything we know so far about this highly anticipated project that's got us all frantically searching for our old copies of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

Which Chronicles of Narnia book is Greta Gerwig adapting for Netflix?

Netflix has not confirmed which book is in the works first, but according to entertainment industry site IMDB she is looking to turn The Magician's Nephew into her first project.

The Magician's Nephew is actually the sixth book in The Chronicles of Narnia series, but it's the first when the books are laid out chronologically.

If this is true, she could be gearing up to produce all seven in order. And that… would kill me. In a good way.

Who is in the cast of Narnia?

Despite plenty of speculation, no cast members have been officially confirmed for Gerwig's The Chronicles of Narnia adaptation.

But as Gerwig puts pen to paper, some of the most reputable entertainment outlets have also been sharing reports of stars who are currently in negotiations for major roles.

And there are a few surprises (along with old favourites).

While Saoirse Ronan has been rumoured to be involved, the actress herself told Jimmy Fallon that she hasn't actually been approached to star in the upcoming movies.

"I mean, there isn't, like, no truth to it. She hasn't asked me yet. She's writing it," Ronan said.

According to Deadline, Charli XCX is also being eyed for the role of the White Witch.

And honestly? We're obsessed with this potential casting.

The woman who gave us 'Brat' potentially stepping into the role previously inhabited by acclaimed actress Tilda Swinton — who delivered a gloriously chilling performance in the 2005 film — is the kind of unexpected crossover we didn't know we needed.

Daniel Craig has also been reported to be joining the cast.

Despite the fact that he previously took part in another (admittedly less successful) fantasy adaptation, The Golden Compass, he's allegedly keen to give the genre another go. And with his love for franchises — James Bond, Knives Out — we know he'll be an incredible addition to a powerful film like Narnia.

Though the role he's been offered is currently not confirmed, we're guessing it might be the part of Professor Digory Kirke.

Elsewhere, Meryl Streep has been reported to be in talks for a 'gender-swapped' role as Aslan, the lion himself (or herself). The news was reported by Nexus Point.

Given Gerwig's history of working with certain actors repeatedly, fans have also been fantasy-casting her frequent collaborators. Timothée Chalamet has been suggested as a perfect fit for Mr. Tumnus, especially since there was that time he channelled a sexy Tumnus on the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival.

Other dream casting suggestions floating around include Idris Elba as Aslan and Margot Robbie as the White Witch, though these remain purely speculative.

When is Narnia's release date?

We finally have some concrete information here!

Netflix recently announced that the first Narnia film will get a theatrical release on Thanksgiving Day 2026, exclusively in IMAX theatres in the US.

It's unknown if we'll be scoring a cinematic release in Australia (but fingers crossed).

After an initial theatrical run, the film will make its streaming debut on Netflix on Christmas Day 2026.

The theatrical release is an interesting move for Netflix, which typically doesn't give its original films significant theatrical windows, but we're not complaining. Fantasy epics like this one need to be seen on the big screen.

What is the plot of Greta Gerwig's Narnia?

Details about the specific plot remain scarce.

Gerwig herself has spoken about her deep connection to the material, telling BBC Radio 4, "I'm slightly in the place of terror because I really do have such reverence for Narnia. I loved Narnia so much as a child. As an adult, C.S. Lewis is a thinker and a writer. I'm intimidated by doing this. It's something that feels like a worthy thing to be intimidated by."

"As a non-British person, I feel a particular sense of wanting to do it correctly… it's like when Americans do Shakespeare, there's a slight feeling of reverence and as if maybe we should treat it with extra care. It is not our countryman," Gerwig said.

What we do know is that Gerwig will be writing and directing at least two Narnia films for Netflix, suggesting this could become a significant franchise if successful.

For now, we'll have to wait for more official announcements, but with Gerwig's track record of thoughtful, visually stunning adaptations, The Chronicles of Narnia appears to be in very capable hands.
