A grandmother's act while babysitting her granddaughter has divided mums everywhere.

Parents and grandparents don’t always see eye to eye when it comes to raising children.

But one act by a grandmother has other mothers up in arms, after she admitted to dry nursing her granddaughter.

Writing for parenting website Scary Mommy, a grandma going by the name of Elizabeth Gooden said she was looking after her two-month-old granddaughter who was suffering from colic when she became inconsolable.

Gooden, whose youngest daughter is just 11 months older than her granddaughter from her eldest 21-year-old daughter, had not had experience with the illness before.

Overwhelmed and exhausted, her daughter had called her to ask if she could look after her granddaughter for a few hours while she had her first shift back at work.

After trying to calm both babies down, Gooden said she was sitting on the sofa holding her granddaughter in her arms when she noticed her rooting around.

"I felt the letdown even though my milk had been dry for months. It was a phantom sensation, but my maternal instincts kicked in and so I latched her on my breast," she wrote.

"I didn’t think about it really. She rooted, I offered, she accepted. Within a few minutes, she was sound asleep."

When her husband walked into the room, he questioned whether it was okay to breastfeed her daughter. She said she couldn't see why not as "all my children had comfort-nursed".

"I was used to being a human pacifier, and I was sure my daughter would be happy I soothed her baby by any means necessary."

When her daughter returned home and was informed about the act, she was fine with it.

"I don't mind if you don't," she said.

Gooden says she's done it several times since while babysitting.

But while her daughter was fine with it, other mums on the website are less impressed. In fact, some are downright horrified.

Commenting on the Facebook post, one mum wrote she was "disgusted".

"This so disgusting on all levels. I'm sorry there is nothing ok with this no matter how much this women tries to justify this. If my mom did this.. Holy f**k I would lose my mind and probably never let her touch my son again," wrote Megan.

"What in the line-crossing hell is this nonsense?! Someone needs to look up the word "boundaries" and stop over-inserting themselves...literally," added another.

However, others defended the grandmother.

"So your mom can nurse you but not your child? What's the big fat deal? I wish to God my mama could've nursed my first baby in any capacity so I could've slept," wrote Anne.
