'We asked Leighton Meester about working with her husband. She gently trolled us.'

In need of a new cosy mystery? Let me introduce you to the Stan Original Series Good Cop/Bad Cop, the answer to your prayers.

The quirky small town comedy just premiered on Stan in Australia, and stars Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester and Aussie actor Luke Cook as sibling detectives Lou and Henry Hickman.

The eight-part series follows the duo working in a small Pacific Northwest town while dealing with their kooky father, Police Chief Big Hank (Clancy Brown).

The co-production between Stan and The CW will feature a cheeky cameo from Adam Brody making a guest appearance alongside his wife Meester.

I was lucky enough to chat with Leighton and Luke ahead of the show's premiere, and I had to ask about having Brody on set.

"I got him the job on the show," Luke joked, taking on the role of his wife.

  1. "He doesn't have much of a resume, so it's kind of a sell to the producers. But you know he's a joy to work with. We've done a number of projects together now, and we like to kiss off camera in between takes and squeeze each other's bums."

  1. To this, I asked Leighton what it was like to 'meet' Adam (aka her husband) and work with him (she's worked with him on three other films).

  1. "I'm a huge fan," she jested. "I definitely knew who he was. I kept on almost calling him the wrong name, and then I felt like kissing him, too. And it was mildly inappropriate, but he was fine with it."

  1. The show was filmed in Queensland along the Gold Coast back in 2024, a location that Sydneysider Luke knows all too well.

"Some people call it the new Silicon Valley," he said.

"I think it's a really exciting spot, and to go back there now and watch it blooming, and to get to shoot there was the best."

Leighton echoes Luke's positive feelings about the GC.

"Love it, love it to bits. No, it's really wonderful. I kind of got hooked on it, but I don't know how it is so different from [the rest of Australia] because it was the only place I went."

While filming Down Under, Luke bestowed upon Leighton some local lingo, like 'how's that' and well, 'C U Next Tuesday.'

"I think I taught you some liberal use of the C-word, you know, which is a cultural thing," he said.

Leighton hasn't fully embraced it just yet.

  1. "I understand how it's cheeky, and I understand how it's also fine. But I don't use it liberally," she said.

  1. Luke added, "She's a conservative when it comes to the C-word alone. I think that's the only part of her that's conservative."

  1. It sounds like the costars got along famously together.

  1. "When you spend many long hours with people, you get a little kooky. You start to laugh at anything," Luke said.

"That's not to downplay how funny Leighton is. She makes me laugh until I cry if I'm delirious, and you know every so often, she just jumps up and bites me on the bum with a joke that just killed me."

As for Good Cop/Bad Cop, Luke is most excited for viewers to see a fresh take on a mystery series.

"It's a great mix of crime and comedy — it's crime dealt with really lightly with the family dynamic. And I don't think that's really ever been done before in this way," he said.

"I don't think anything really compares to this, because nothing is the mix of crime, family, and comedy that this show is."

Leighton promises that the Stan series is your next comfort watch.

"It's as fun and cosy as any sitcom that you just love to curl up with, and then you get to watch a crime every week that we get to solve. It's not always like a murder mystery. Sometimes it's theft or whatever crime," she said.

"There's this crime element that's cosy. It's like they're solving murders but you feel safe."

The Stan Original Series Good Cop/Bad Cop is now streaming, only on Stan. New episodes drop weekly.
