An awkward monologue and a rogue singlet: The moments you missed from the 2020 Golden Globes.

The 2020 Golden Globes are finally here and awards season has officially kicked off.

Today, the who’s who of Hollywood settled in at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles for a day of hilarious (and often controversial) jabs from Ricky Gervais, award-giving and… awkwardness.

You see, awards season isn’t just about red carpets, best-dressed lists, and kick-ass acceptance speeches.

It’s also about those easy-to-miss moments that we’ll remember for years to come.

Last year, we saw Nicole Kidman’s infamous stage snub of Rami Malek, Macaulay Culkin’s hilarious live-tweeting of the awards in support of his brother Keiran, and of course, accidental viral star Fiji Water Girl.

From Tom Hanks’ response to Ricky Gervais’ explosive opening monologue to Jason Momoa’s black singlet, there were so many blink-and-you-miss-it moments at this year’s awards.

Here’s a round-up of the eight moments you may have missed from the Golden Globes.

1. When Ryan Seacrest blatantly… lied.

As usual, Ryan Seacrest was back on the red carpet interviewing dozens of celebrities.

But after interviewing Sofia Vergara, fans were quick to point out a slightly awkward moment.

Except… he doesn’t follow her.

2. Bill Hader and Rachel Bilson confirm their relationship.

Barry star Bill Hader and Rachel Bilson confirmed their relationship by appearing on the red carpet together.

The couple were first rumoured to be dating in December, when they were spotted grabbing coffee together in Hader’s hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

3. All the awkward moments from Ricky Gervais’ monologue.

As expected, Ricky Gervais’ opening monologue was… eventful.

After claiming that this is the last time he will host the Golden Globes, Gervais was quick to make a dig at Felicity Huffman, who was recently imprisoned for her role in the college admissions scandal.

“I came here in a limo tonight, and the license plate was made by Felicity Huffman. I feel sorry for her daughter. That must be the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to her – and her dad was in Wild Hogs,” he said.

Gervais also noted that it was a big year for “pedophile movies” including “Surviving R. Kelly, Leaving Neverland, and Two Popes” before he referenced Jeffrey Epstein’s death.

“Jeffrey Epstein didn’t kill himself. Shut up, I know he’s your friend! You had to make your own way here, didn’t you? Take your own plane,” he said.

He also made a dig at Leonardo DiCaprio, adding: “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is so long, that at the premiere, Leonardo DiCaprio’s date was too old for him by the time it was over.”

Yikes.

4. Russell Crowe’s powerful message about climate change.

Although Russell Crowe was awarded Best Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie for his role in The Loudest Voice, the actor wasn’t present at the Golden Globes.

Instead, Crowe opted to remain in Australia amid the bushfire crisis to protect his home.

Upon receiving the award for playing Roger Ailes in the miniseries, Jennifer Aniston read a speech on his behalf: “Make no mistake, the tragedy unfolding in Australia is climate-changed based. We need to act based on science, move our global workforce to renewable energy and respect our planet for the unique and amazing place it is.”

5. The constant nods to Australia.

Throughout the awards, there were constant references to Australia’s bushfire victims.

While onstage with his kids Dylan and Paris, actor Pierce Brosnan sent his thoughts to all those “affected by the bushfires in Australia”.

Ellen DeGeneres also sent a message to Australia while receiving the Carol Burnett Award for excellence in television.

“Australia, I love you. My heart goes out to everyone suffering in Australia, and all the animals we’ve lost,” she said.

In her acceptance speech, Patricia Arquette used her time on stage to remind viewers that “we won’t remember this night in the history books” but we will remember “a country on the brink of war” and “the continent of Australia on fire”.

Australian actress Cate Blanchett also thanked volunteer firefighters currently battling the bushfires:

“I want to do a special callout to the volunteer firefighters who have been at the centre of battling the climate disaster in Australia. And of course when one country faces a climate disaster we all face a climate disaster. We’re in it together.” #GoldenGlobes pic.twitter.com/uiumjV4XpT

6. Jason Momoa is in… a singlet?

In what can only be described as a peak Jason Momoa moment, the Aquaman actor was spotted wearing a black singlet in the crowd after stripping off his velvet suit jacket.

7. Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s reference to THAT Obama scene.

After accepting the award for Best TV Series – Musical or Comedy, Phoebe Waller-Bridge thanked former President Barack Obama, who listed Fleabag on his list of the best TV shows of the year.

“I’d like to thank Obama for putting us on his list. As some of you may know, he’s always been on mine,” she said.

“And if you don’t get that, watch season one of Fleabag.”

8. Brad Pitt’s subtle Titanic joke.

While accepting the award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Brad Pitt thanked his “partner in crime” and co-star Leonardo DiCaprio.

He also slipped in a subtle Titanic joke, adding: “Still, I would have shared the raft.”
