'I dismissed the Gold Coast as tacky and touristy. Then I moved there.'

Last year, my husband and I became one of many joining the 'great exodus' from Sydney to Queensland.

After one too many winters layering jumpers indoors (because apparently heating is optional in Sydney housing), we decided to take the leap, seeking warmth, adventure, and rent that wasn't going to make us cry.

We picked the Gold Coast because it was close to Brisbane and, well, it had a beach. I hadn't been there since I was about eight, and my only reference point was "it's like Australian Vegas". But after a year of living here, I can tell you it's so much more than that stereotype suggests.

If you're thinking of booking a trip (or making the move yourself), here's what you need to know.

But first, watch the must-pack travel essentials for your next trip. Post continues below.

Mamamia.

Pack your activewear. All of it.

A few weeks after we moved, I was sitting at Burleigh Headland on a Saturday night watching the sunset, and I was surprised to find that nearly everyone was in active wear going for a walk and not dressed up in heels to go to Burleigh Pavilion.

Don't get me wrong – if you want to go out on the Gold Coast, you'll be spoilt for choice. But everyone here prioritises their "hot girl walks" and exploring the incredible scenery.

I've become one of those daily beach walk people (who am I?), usually walking from Main Beach down to the end of Surfers Paradise. But there are endless trails to choose from. The walk up to Burleigh Headland is absolutely non-negotiable – the views are unmatched.

Not a beach person? It's only 40 minutes to Tamborine Mountain, where you'll find the most beautiful rainforest walks. Make a day of it and visit some of the Gold Coast's best waterfalls or explore the glow-worm caves.

Arrive with an empty belly.

The food scene here will blow your mind – there's something for every occasion, budget, and craving.

My absolute favourite is Costa Taco in Broadbeach. It looks like it's been transported straight from Mexico, and the chill vibes make you feel like you're on holiday. The food is authentic, with each menu item explaining which part of Mexico inspired it. Perfect for a quick lunch that doesn't feel too quick.

For something fancier, Tommy's in Currumbin serves incredible Italian food with beach views. My recommendation here is to book early and request the upstairs balcony seats for the best outlook.

For breakfast, head to Bam Bam Bakehouse at Mermaid Beach. They're famous for their flaky croissants – either classic or loaded with bacon and egg, karaage chicken, or eggs Benny. You have never tried anything like it.

If you need something on the go, O-Bagel in Broadbeach will ruin you for all other bagels. The "Drop the Beef" with BBQ brisket and chipotle sour cream is genuinely mouth-watering.

Embrace the tourist traps.

Controversial opinion: if something's popular, there's usually a good reason. And I'm all for a proper tourist day out.

Living near Surfers Paradise, I've grown to love the chaos. The beach is gorgeous and never feels overcrowded – unlike Sydney in summer, where you're practically sitting on strangers' laps.

Once you're done with surf and sand, the madness of Cavill Avenue is a must-do experience. Whether you want to bar-hop or have a wholesome family day, there's something for everyone. Definitely make time to drop into Ripley's Believe It Or Not and don't skip the virtual reality games (not to brag, but I left with the high score).

The theme parks are absolutely worth the money. I loved Dreamworld for the rides and wildlife experiences, including getting to hold a koala for the first time (his name was Stanley)!

My mind was also blown at the Tiger Show watching tigers climb a 20-foot pole (who knew?!). The Steel Taipan roller coaster is terrifying but incredible, though maybe skip it if you're scared of heights — the loops will definitely test you.

The best 'everything' you can buy is at the markets.

As a Surfers local, I'm obsessed with the markets on Surfers Paradise Beach held on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The jewellery stalls alone are worth the trip – definitely browse here before buying anything in-store.

My best purchase? A tiny jumper for my puppy that says "Adidog." It matched my pants. Peak cute.

For local produce, spend a Sunday morning at the HOTA markets.

It's super family-friendly with music and entertainment for kids on the lawns overlooking the man-made lake. Plus endless food stalls and local goods – plants, jams, gins, meats – perfect for taking home.

Summer never ends.

It's August and people are swimming — without wetsuits!

The weather is incredible year-round (goodbye, indoor jumper layering). It's so lovely that I've even taken up lap swimming (I am not very good, but I try).

If I haven't convinced you already, the weather alone is reason enough to visit the GC.
