The Gogglebox moment we've all been waiting for has finally aired. And it's beautiful.

One of Gogglebox Australia’s most adored couples, Wayne and Tom, have been together for 17 years.

And last week, along with millions of Australians, they watched the head of the Australian Bureau of Statistics, David Kalisch, announce the result of the same-sex marriage survey.

As we now know, 61.6 per cent of Australians voted ‘Yes’ in favour of marriage equality.

On Wednesday night, viewers watched as they sat on their couch with their characteristic cocktails, in marriage equality T-shirts, and reflected on what will become a landmark day in Australian history.

Channel Ten’s The Project covered the celebrations, picturing Tom embracing a police officer, with tears streaming down his face.

“I thought you said you were by yourself…” Wayne says. “So instead you’re getting on with a hot copper!”

“I was crying!” Tom reasons, “and this policeman walked up to me and goes, ‘we’re all here for you,’ and gave me a cuddle,” his voice cracking.

“It was very nice.

“This is just 50 years of pent up shame, and sh*t… And finally today, that whole fear that everyone hates you and doesn’t accept you is not true.”

The couple met at a dance, while Kylie Minogue's Love at First Sight was playing in the background.

They have three children, and have previously said that if same-sex marriage was legalised, they would love to have a small beach wedding.

Late last year, Wayne and Tom watched an episode of Married at First Sight, where same-sex couple Andy and Craig were 'married' in a dating experiment.

Wayne openly cried, and said the one thing his mother wanted was "to see us married, and we're never going to get to do it". His mother has passed away.

Tom calmly replied, while holding his hand, that they "can one day".

Last week, Australia was assured that "one day" should be very, very soon.
