NSW child bride’s marriage permitted by father, say police

The marriage of a 12-year-old girl to a Lebanese university student was endorsed by the girls’ father, police will allege. According to Fairfax, detectives working on the case have said that the father was “shocked” to learn that the 26-year-old University of Newcastle student has been charged with 25 child sex offences. Charges have not been laid against girls’ parents at this stage.

Gippsland residents told to evacuate due to out-of-control fires

Gippsland residents have been told to evacuate as out-of-control fires sweep through the region. Last night, fire authorities issued warnings for residents in Goongerah and Martins Creek to evacuate or be prepared to defend their properties within the next 24 hours. With Melbourne expecting a top of 40 degrees today, Victorian fire authorities are warning all Victorians to prepare fire plans, keep hydrated and to look out for vulnerable people.

Boy critical after falling off skateboard being pulled by car

A 12-year-old boy is in a critical condition after falling off a skateboard while holding on to a moving car being driven by this father. The boy and two friends were being pulled by a Kia Sportage up a suburban street in Sydney’s Inner-West. The boy has been placed in an induced coma. He has bleeding on the brain and a fractured skull.

Man feared dead in shark attack off SA coast

A man is missing and feared dead following a shark attack off the South Australian coast. The 28-year-old man’s friends watched as he was dragged under by the shark while spear fishing at Goldsmith Beach on the Yorke Peninsula at noon on Saturday.

Labor holds Rudd’s former seat

Labor has held the Queensland seat of Griffith. The ALP’s Terri Butler won the seat, leading the LNP’s Bill Glasson 52.33 to 47.67 per cent on the two-party preferred count with just one booth’s votes yet to be counted. The previous member for Griffith, former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, tweeted:

Bosnian anti-government protests spread

Anti-government protests spread across Bosnia overnight, resulting in the nation’s presidency building being set ablaze. 200 people were injured as police used tear gas to control the crowds in Sarajevo, the nation’s capital. The local government in the northern city of Tuzia was forced to resign after protesters stormed the government building.

The protests began earlier this week with a clash between police and the workers from formerly state-owned companies who claimed that they had not been paid for their work. Bosnia currently has an unemployment rate of 44 per cent, and its government is widely regarded as corrupt.

Sochi hijack bid foiled

A plan to hijack a plane in an suspected terror attempt on the Sochi Olympic Ceremony has been foiled by the Turkish military. Turkey deployed two F-16 jets to force down the Ukrainian airliner, after a man on board forced his way into the cockpit with what he claimed was a detonator. It is currently unclear as to whether the terrorist threat was serious, as the man was drunk when the attempted hijacking occurred.
