I'll nod, smile and say thank you very much — because my parents taught me, just as I've taught my kids: you get what you get and you don't get upset. And that a good present-opening poker face is an essential part of festive cheer.

But let's be honest. There's nothing like the absolute joy, the bare-faced delight at opening a present that you LOVE. Not to torture the analogy, but it makes you feel like a kid again.

So this year, when I was asked to put together a gift guide for Myer, I knew exactly how to narrow down the mind-boggling choices. My filter was simple: would I want this for Christmas? When I was in my 20s, living with friends and with a… slight bank balance, I had a wonderful mate who had a bit more money than me, and for Christmas, a couple of years running, she bought me a beautiful bed set.

Now to some, that might not feel like a very exciting present, but I absolutely would argue otherwise. I love great bedding. It's the kind of "treat" you might put off, but it's one of those little touches that can make a house feel like home.

It's rare that I'll buy myself a throw blanket. But it's almost guaranteed I'll love it draped over my knees on the couch in front of the telly (yes, even in summer if the air con's on), or at the end of the bed to look like the kind of thoughtful person who's prepared for "light chills". No, it doesn't match my bed set above, but this colour? Absolute delight. I want it tomorrow — I simply can't wait for Christmas.

New Kindle 11th Gen in Green, $199.00

Okay, the first bit of tech on my wishlist (who am I forwarding this to again?): a Kindle. I am still travelling around with an actual book in my bag, and considering how many books I read — for work and pleasure — this is not a sound decision for my back. I want a Kindle so I can carry ALL the books at once, try out books before I commit and have a lovely GREEN one like this so I can consider myself stylish.

BOSE Quiet Comfort Ultra Headphones in Deep Plum, $649.95

Splurge alert. Would I like a pair of BOSE headphones? Yes, and so would you — and most people you know. Would I like them to also come in a cool colour, have noise-cancelling mode and be super comfy on the ears? YES. Are they an excellent boujie present for someone who loves to walk with music or pods, or just shut out the world and look cool doing it? Also yes.

Nutribullet Blender Mega Pack in Black, $119

I don't have a Nutribullet, but I'd love one. If I want to make a smoothie in the morning for my daughter — or myself — and I often do, I have to wrangle and wash the whole blender. No one wants to do that at 7am, so smoothies end up being few and far between in our house. Let's get one of these and start whizzing up goodness without the hassle. Just call me Gwyneth.

A portable Nutribullet! My teen would die of excitement to be able to take this away with her, or to football training. So, this present would still be for me, to be clear, but she could borrow it. Maybe.

This one's for my daughter. Have you noticed that now we all have a camera in our hands at all times, it's become cool to add another camera to your arsenal? This one looks very serious and stylish and has lots of extras, like close-up mode, but ultimately it prints the cute instant pictures teenagers love sticking around their rooms. Because it's a bit more elevated than a point-and-shoot instant, it will grow with them.

Seed Heritage Kaitlyn Rectangle Sunglasses in Black, $49.95

I love great sunglasses, but I don't love expensive designer ones that would ruin your month if you lost them. Sunnies are eminently loseable. These ones from Seed Heritage balance just the right amount of edge with a classic shape. The black ones are for me, the tortoise ones for a different, more daring version of me (aka my cooler friend).

Unison Leo Weekender Bag in Khaki, $149.99

Is my elderly boyfriend the only bloke who has been known to swipe the kids' school bag when we're going away for a night or two? No, I didn't think so. The man needs a cool weekender, and this one has just the right outdoorsy edge. It also comes in black.

Last but not least, I think portable speakers make excellent presents. And this one has a rock-n-roll vibe to it that — and I don't want to stereotype — people of the grown-up male persusasion might just love. It's also super-mini, so it can be REALLY portable — shoved in a bag or a pocket, and pulled out to make people go "ooooh", which is what we all want from a present, isn't it? It's also big on bass and a little bit waterproof.
