You know when a US or UK show gets an Australian adaptation, and you cross your fingers, hoping they don't lose the magic? Well, you can unclench. The new Australian take on the hit comedy Ghosts is not just good — it's uniquely, hilariously, and authentically Australian.

And it's about to be your new TV obsession.

When Kate and Sean inherit Ramshead Manor, a dilapidated country estate, they think they're setting up a boutique hotel. Cute, right? Wrong. The real test isn't the renovations… it's the six ghostly residents who refuse to check out, especially after Kate develops the ability to see the dead after hitting her head. It's a whirlwind of hauntings and centuries-old secrets, but ultimately, they find a chaotic new family.

The incredible ensemble cast, including Tamala, Rowan Witt, Mandy McElhinney, Brent Hill, Michelle Brasier, Jackson Tozer, Ines English, and George Zao, bring this hilarious concept to life, but the real magic is how Australian they've made it.

I had the opportunity to visit the set of Ghosts in Perth where I interviewed the cast and also got a glimpse of the incredible attention to detail that went into the show.

"It's a really recognisable Ghosts world, but we're really grabbing the show by both hands and making all the ghosts really original and truthful to Australia's history. We've made our leader a First Nations woman," Tamala told Mamamia

"I feel like all the old Ghosts fans will come on board and be really happy with what we've created, but… even like the way that it's been shot is really elevated. I'm really excited for people to see it."

And she's 100% right about that. The show feels so quintessentially Australian. The commitment to making each scene feel localised goes right down to the set details.

Walking through the set — and having grown up in Australia myself — I felt a huge sense of familiarity. From the distinctive Tupperware that existed in every Aussie home to cowrie shells (another coastal staple Down Under).

Rowan, who plays Sean in the show, gushed about the "Easter eggs" scattered everywhere, from the set to the costumes.

"Walking around the set, there's so much stuff there that I recognise from my childhood. Random bits of Tupperware and everyone's got that big green bowl. Stuff feels very Australian," he said.

He even pointed out the specific, local humour in the props, noting that his co-star's character, Satan, has Aussie-specific tattoos.

"I inspected all of his tattoos, the dingo, the red shark. There's so many little bits and pieces."

You can't get more local than that.

But beyond the laughs and the props, the show is tackling Australia's rich and complex history head-on, particularly with its First Nations representation.

"200+ years of history, plus the First Nations 85,000 years before that. We don't shy away from that. We're very truthful about all the different facets of Australian history as much as we can with the six ghosts," Tamala said.

But all of that vital historical context is wrapped up in an incredible package of ensemble comedy.

It's the kind of show that lives and dies by its cast, and thankfully, this brilliant ensemble have such magnetic chemistry that their interactions truly hold up the entire show. And that's certainly not by chance. There was an initial two-week rehearsals period, which sounded intense to say the least.

"When we all got here and met each other, we had two weeks of rehearsals and they were deep. We got really deep, and I think that's what bonded us as a cast. We spoke a lot about our characters' backstories," Jackson, who plays the character of Satan, said.

"For something that's a comedy, they're all very sad characters. It's a silly comedy about ghosts living together, but you've got to realise, 'what is the feeling of being eternally stuck in a house? Being dead. Not being able to interact with things.'"

This depth of connection is what really carries the show, ultimately making it a funny yet touching story about a found family.

"The show is about a group of characters that are each deeply flawed. Ultimately very lonely people. It's about a kind of found family and how it takes Sean and Kate coming into this house to kind of unite all of these like disparate people with very disparate opinions," Rowan said.
