Just a day after Georgie Gardner’s resignation from the TODAY show, three names are being floated to fill her chair.
As Channel Nine prepares to announce a replacement for Georgie Gardner following the announcement yesterday that she’s leaving, three names have floated to the top of the pile.
Former Sunrise co-host Melissa Doyle and former Wake Up! co-host Natarsha Belling have both been discussed among senior Nine executives as possible Gardner replacements. But so is Nine favourite Sylvia Jeffreys.
Doyle has had a string of recent departures including Sunrise and the recent axeing of the 7pm news bulletin on 7Two.
“It all depends on when she is off-contract with Seven but it would be a masterstroke if they got her, though I doubt she would want to play second fiddle to Lisa [Wilkinson] on the couch given that she was the leading lady for so long on Sunrise,” one source close to the situation told Sydney Morning Herald.
However, sources have said that Doyle is under contract until 2015 with Channel 7.
Since Channel Ten aired the final episode of Wake Up!, Natarsha Belling’s name has been brought up.
Fairfax Media, however, understands the likely successor to Gardner is Sylvia Jeffreys, originally from Queensland. She has been reading Nine’s non-primetime news for many months and has been a regular fill-in on Today and its weekend counterpart.
Nine has confirmed a replacement for Gardner would be announced prior to her departure on June 6, but didn’t confirm or deny the rumours.
