Anticipation is building for season eight of Game of Thrones, which we now know is dropping onto our screens on 14 April.
We’ve invested almost a decade in this show. We’ve been waiting for more than 18 months for the conclusion. We will be tuning in to the final season no matter what.
And the people at HBO know this.
So in the latest Game of Thrones trailer, which dropped Wednesday morning, they’ve given very little away about the events of season eight.
Watch the Game of Thrones season 8 trailer:
It’s mostly looks of grim acceptance as everyone braces for the battle with the White Walkers, dragons flying and ominous narration. The trailer gives us very little information – except for in one shot, which might just have confirmed a popular fan theory of season seven.
Towards the end of the trailer, we see Cersei Lannister looking tearful, lonely and resigned to what we’re sure is her near-certain doom, and in her hand is a wine glass.
Drinking wine, as we all know, isn’t something pregnant women are likely to do. And yet Cersei claimed to be with child at the end of season seven.
Many fans guessed at the time that Cersei was lying about her pregnancy in an attempt to keep Jamie by her side – and her sipping from a wine glass in the trailer is a big hint that theory is correct.
We already know from a scene where Tyrion guessed Cersei was pregnant because she refused wine that the people of Westeros know that drinking alcohol while pregnant is best avoided. So it’s not simply a matter of our current guidelines not being relevant. That being said, if the world as you knew it was ending, you might be inclined to think “stuff it” and reach for the nearest bottle.
The only other explanation for the wine – and this is a sad one – is that Cersei loses her baby sometime during the events of season eight.
Knowing Cersei though, we’re inclined to believe it’s the former.
