The four words Gabby Petito's loved one said to her fiancé before he killed her.

Four years ago, Gabby Petito was on a road trip of a lifetime with her fiancé, Brian Laundrie. They had driven all the way from New York to Wyoming, when she went missing.

Her missing persons case struck the nation, with countless internet sleuths voluntarily helping in the search for Gabby. They, along with police, tracked down the locations where she'd been sighted, with the final time being on August 27 in Jackson, Wyoming.

Unfortunately, her remains were discovered in Bridger-Teton National Forest on September 19, 2021. In October, authorities found a confession note from Laundrie beside his body. He confessed to killing the 22-year-old before taking his own life.

Now, the tragic case is being revisited in a three-part Netflix documentary, American Murder: Gabby Petito, which sees Petito's family and friends share her story in their own words, along with excerpts from her journal.

In the trailer for the documentary, the late vlogger's loved ones can be heard speaking about Petito and Laundrie's volatile relationship.

"Gabby and Brian seemed like a loving couple, but behind the scenes they would get into arguments," said one interviewee.

"The happiest people on social media usually have the darkest skeletons in their closet."

In a haunting moment, Petito's loved one also revealed the four words she said to Laundrie before the couple embarked on their cross-country van trip.

"I remember saying to Brian, 'You keep her safe,'" said the interviewee. "And he looked at me, and he smiled. He said, 'I will.'"

Speaking about the disappearance itself, another loved one said she "knew something bad had happened" to Petito, and that Laundrie was responsible.

"I was screaming 'What did he do?.'"

The trailer, which was released at the end of January, has received mixed reviews, with some accusing Netflix of exploiting Petito's tragic death.

Who was Gabby Petito?

Gabby Petito was a 22-year-old vlogger from New York. She began a YouTube channel to document her cross-country van-life travel with her fiancé Brian Laundrie. The pair got engaged in 2020, during COVID, and decided to postpone their wedding in lieu of a road trip in July 2021.

"Gabby was a free spirit who loved travel, art and nature," reads a tribute on the Gabby Petito Foundation website. "She was just starting her life as a vanlife travel vlogger and was so full of joy as her journey was just beginning.

"Her smile could fill a room, she loved movies, music, healthy food, and created amazing works of art. Gabby was a wonderful big sister, the oldest of six, they looked up to her and adored her. The tragic loss of Gabby has shattered our family. Our hearts will forever be broken."

What happened to Gabby Petito?

Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie had been documenting their road trip on social media when Petito disappeared. Her final sighting was at a Whole Foods in Jackson, Wyoming on August 27, 2021.

Earlier that month, a disturbing 911 call described a violent domestic dispute in Moab, Utah, where a witness reported seeing Laundrie slapping and hitting Petito before driving off.

However, police classified the incident as a mental health crisis rather than domestic abuse. A separate witness recalled seeing the couple arguing, with Laundrie allegedly preventing Petito from getting into their van and taking her phone.

The final text messages sent from her phone included one on August 27, 2021, from Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. The family found the messages unusual, as the 22-year-old uncharacteristically referred to her grandfather by his given name, 'Stan'.

"Can you help Stan, I just keep getting his voicemails and missed calls," it read.

Another text was sent from the phone on August 30, "No service in Yosemite." Petito's family do not believe these messages were actually sent by Gabby.

On September 1, Laundrie returned alone to his family home in Florida, driving the van. Upon realising that Petito wasn't with her fiancé, her family reported her missing on September 11, 2021.

The case garnered global attention, with internet sleuths combing through the couple's social media accounts looking for clues.

Eight days later, on September 19, 2021, authorities found Petito's remains in Wyoming's Bridger-Teton National Forest. The coroner determined she died from blunt-force trauma and manual strangulation.

Meanwhile, Laundrie had gone missing on September 13, when he left his parents' house to go on a hike. He was found deceased on October 20, 2021, in Florida's Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park. He had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and left behind a notebook with a written confession to Petito's murder.

In February 2024, Petito's parents reached a confidential settlement with the Laundrie family in a civil lawsuit, accusing them of withholding information about their son's confession. They also established The Gabby Petito Foundation to support searches for missing persons and aid victims of domestic violence.

"With a mission to turn our tragedy into purpose, the Gabby Petito Foundation was born. We wish to address the needs of organisations that support locating missing persons and to provide aid to organisations that assist survivors of domestic violence through education, awareness, and prevention strategies," reads a statement on their website.
