Chrishell Stause told G Flip she was straight. Then they went to a house viewing.

G Flip was gifted a drum kit on their ninth birthday. It changed the trajectory of their entire life.

"I remember my eyes just popping out of my head. I was that excited about it," they told Kate Langbroek on Mamamia's No Filter.

Growing up, they struggled with academics — it just wasn't how their brain worked.

"I didn't do very well in school. I was put in special classes, and I would have to stay back at lunchtime and recess to learn, because I really sucked," they said.

"But then I had niche things that I knew everything about… And then it was music that I was obsessed with and drums that I wanted to know everything about. And then that took me to where I am now."

Today, they're one of Australia's most exciting and boundary-pushing musicians, touring the world as a lead singer and drummer. And they're set to bring their upcoming album, Dream Ride, back home to Australia next February and March.

It all comes back to that one drum kit.

"When I got my drums, everything changed," G Flip recalled. "I wanted to be a rock star or in a band."

Drumming was "the only thing I could stay still and do".

The teacher who changed everything.

But it wasn't just the drums that shaped G Flip's path — it was the person who taught them how to play.

"It wasn't until I met my drum teacher in year seven, Jenny Rose Morris, who was to me the coolest person, and I wanted to be exactly like them," G Flip said.

"She really became my person who I wanted to be exactly like, and so she was a drummer in a band, so I wanted to be a drummer.

"I think drums took me on a path, and then Jenny solidified that path. And then it never ended."

When Jenny passed away from cancer shortly after G Flip got accepted into university to study music, the loss hit hard. But it also cemented their desire to chase their dreams.

"I kind of remember wanting to go on a mission to fulfil everything that we talked about growing up," G Flip recalled.

In the practice room at school, they'd dream together about G Flip's future.

"We talk about how we're going to tour the world, and we're going to see America, and we're going to live on a tour bus…" they said. "When she passed away, it really hit me. Like, 'Holy s***. I want to go do everything that we talked about.'"

Jenny was someone who really saw G Flip for who they were. One thing she told them stuck with them to this day.

"She said something like, 'One day when you're older, you'll figure out who you truly are, and it's going to be so magical for you.'"

"It wasn't till later that I first got with a woman for the first time that I was like, 'Man, Jenny knew me.'"

"I remember her saying, 'I don't know what you're going to do with your life, but it's going to be something' and it makes me tear up when I think about it… I really feel like she's like a guardian angel to me."

Finding their truth.

As G Flip learned more about themselves, they discovered another part of their identity: non-binary.

"It's just so me. I just feel so non-binary. And if you don't get it, it's because you're probably not non-binary," they explained.

It's something they've always felt, even as a child.

"I'd look at myself in the mirror, and… because I went to Catholic school, and I'd be like, 'Wow, God, really, he ran out of girl insides and brain, and I think he just put a bit of boy brain or insides in me, because I feel like a mix.' And I'm like, seven years old, eight years old thinking that."

Today, they're completely comfortable in their own skin, with an adoring wife by their side.

The way G Flip and Selling Sunset's Chrishell Stause met sounds like something out of a rom-com. It was a Halloween party in 2021 hosted by Australia's own Tones and I, and both G Flip and Chrishell came dressed as skeletons.

Those skeletons have become their thing.

"I've got skeletons tattooed on my arms, and our wedding rings have skeletons on them," G Flip said.

"It wasn't till like, six months later or something that then some sparks flew."

After a few kisses and flirty encounters, G Flip asked Chrishell out, but she initially shut them down, saying she was straight. G Flip brushed it off, but when they asked for Chrishell's help house hunting, something shifted.

G Flip knew they'd been rejected but when they rocked up and saw Chrishell "looking incredible", they had a feeling this could be something more.

"I knew she'd taken time to get ready," they recalled.

"In her words… she was getting ready like she was going to meet someone that she had a crush on, like, took that extra time and tried on different dresses… And so then that's kind of when it clicked in her brain.

"And then we were just at this house showing and we just flirted the whole time. And then the flirting never ended."

The wedding world tour.

Three years on, that flirting definitely hasn't stopped. They married after just three months of dating — something G Flip said many people don't realise.

"I think a lot of the world thinks we got married like a year later," they said.

"Obviously, we called our family and… we worked out we both had the day off the next day, so then we ended up deciding to go to Vegas and get married."

They celebrate it more than most.

"We do a wedding once a year. We renew our vows. It kind of started because our first wedding was so shotgun," G Flip said.

After the spontaneous Vegas wedding, family and friends felt left out, so they promised another celebration.

"The next one was in Palm Springs so that our friends in LA could come. And then my family's like, 'But we can't make it'. So we're like, 'Yeah, okay, we'll do another one'."

The next was in Australia for G Flip's family, but other friends missed out again.

"And then it just became the wedding world tour. So now we do a wedding every year."

Each celebration is planned just a week beforehand, which surprisingly makes them less stressed. The most recent was their medieval-themed vow renewal in July.

"Our whole thing with weddings is we don't want to be stressed, because we hate stressful weddings and it should be around love," G Flip said.

But their very public love story hasn't been without its challenges. When they first went public, the backlash was intense.

"I think, honestly, just Chrishell not being with a man was the biggest shock," G Flip said.

"When we came out public in a relationship, like the DMs and just the things… I just couldn't believe how much it affected people's days.

"It was very eye-opening to me about how people are homophobic."

The hate hasn't stopped, but G Flip has found a way to cope with it.

"I'm still getting DMS that people are so upset with my gender, or that I'm with Chrishell, or that I'm queer," G Flip said.

"In the end, it kind of does amuse me that someone is literally driving to the shops to buy some cereal and bread and milk, and they just have to pull the car over to message me how angry they are. Like, what a crazy way to live."

Perhaps the most personal part of G Flip's story is the one they're still living — their fertility journey with Chrishell.

In June, Chrishell shared that she was going through what might be her last IVF attempt before trying other options, and G Flip opened up about how difficult it's been.

"It's been a real struggle," they told Mamamia.

"We've had so many, God, so many ups and downs. And, for anyone that goes through that whole process, it really takes a toll, and there are hopeful moments, and then sad moments."

But watching Chrishell navigate this journey has only deepened G Flip's love and admiration.

"I admire just everything, and how strong she is, and how she's taking all the news that we get," G Flip said of Chrishell.

"She's so amazing, and she's such a brilliant and strong human being for everything she's gone through."
