Frances Abbott stars in emotional video for marriage equality.

Frances Abbott, daughter of former Prime Minister Tony Abbott, is a supporter of marriage equality – despite her father’s beliefs.

Earlier this month the 26-year-old fitness model shared an image to Instagram of herself wearing a shirt that said simply: ‘Vote yes’, in reference to the ongoing postal survey on the issue.

Now, Frances has spoken with The Equality Campaign and shared her thoughts in a video released this morning on social media.

“You can’t help who you fall in love with,” Frances tells the camera. “Love just happens sometimes and it’s unexpected and that’s what’s so awesome about it.”

In the video, Frances discusses her aunt’s relationship, referring to Tony Abbott’s sister Christine Forster who is in a long-term relationship with Virginia Edwards and is also a vocal advocate for same-sex marriage.

“I look at Aunty Chris and I don’t think she planned to fall in love with Virginia. It just happened,” Frances says.

“To see Aunty Chris marry Virginia, to do it in front of friends and family, it would be so special.”

Frances goes onto say she thinks marriage equality would “make society a much better place” with less fear and discrimination.

And, while she admits there are people in her family on the “opposite side of the fence”, she said this isn’t about politics. It’s about love.

“My mother and father raised me to stand up for what I believe in,” she says in the video.

Frances’ father Tony Abbott is a loud opponent of same-sex marriage – for reasons to do with religious freedom – and has been critical of the ‘yes’ camp’s tactics.

He is yet to respond publicly to his daughter’s stance on the issue.

The survey officially closes on November 7 and results will be published on November 15.
