'I'm convinced this town is the perfect city escape and it's ridiculously close to Sydney.'

I'm the type of person who always needs a trip planned, even if it's just a weekend away. My sanity quite literally depends on knowing I'll soon be packing my bag to escape reality for a little while.

As a Perth-turned-Sydney gal, I've made it my mission over the past three years to explore as many gorgeous spots as my trusty Corolla can handle. And let me tell you, I've discovered my new favourite weekend escape: Fitzroy Falls and the gorgeous neighbouring Kangaroo Valley.

Picture this: waking up in a charming cottage with cows literally at your doorstep. Spending your morning soaking in the rolling hills from panoramic viewpoints. Stumbling across breathtaking waterfalls during afternoon nature walks.

Plus, there are the delicious bakeries, quaint boutiques and antique stores where you could lose yourself for hours.

Honestly, I can't think of a better way to reset than swapping city chaos for countryside calm.

Whether you're planning your next girls' trip, a romantic getaway or a family nature escape, this region honestly has it all. And I'm already planning my return trip.

Getting there.

Fitzroy Falls is about a 1 hour 40 minute (ish) drive from Sydney in the Southern Highlands region, with Kangaroo Valley another 20 minutes south — perfect for a Friday afternoon escape or long weekend getaway.

The drive takes you down the Hume Motorway and Old Hume Highway. We knocked off early on Friday to get on the road. Traffic wasn't too bad, but I'm sure if you left during peak hour, you'd want to give yourself a bit of wiggle room.

There are plenty of service stations along the Hume, so no need to stress about filling up before you leave the city.

If you don't have a car, I'd suggest hiring one. This really is a destination that you need wheels to make the most of it, and there are so many spots you don't want to miss.

Where to stay in Kangaroo Valley?

You've got options here, depending on the vibe you're after.

From boutique hotels to cosy farm Airbnbs, there's something for everyone.

The perfect spot for us was The Gardener's Cottage, a one-bedroom country cottage situated on a working farm in Wildes Meadow, between Fitzroy Falls and Robertson. I couldn't have been happier! (Like hello? Cows!!!).

The drive there was like something straight from a postcard, with endless rolling hills and greenery. It officially felt like it was time to relax.

Each morning, we walked outside our cottage to be greeted by a field of cows grazing in the morning mist. The stillness allowed us to properly unwind, choosing board games and Lego over movies and screens.

If you want that peaceful farm experience like we had, look around Fitzroy Falls or Wildes Meadow. But if you would prefer to be walking distance from cafés and shops, base yourself in Kangaroo Valley town.

Things to do in Kangaroo Valley and Fitzroy Falls.

Once you've done your fair share of relaxing at your accommodation, it will be time to go explore.

Fitzroy Falls is known for its stunning walking tracks, so don't skip the Morton National Park. We opted for a stroll along the West Rim Walking Track and, honestly, the fresh air and gorgeous scenery genuinely left me feeling so refreshed.

Enjoy stunning lookouts offering green canopies as far as the eye can see and incredible waterfall views. It's a grade three 3.5km track that takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours.

We passed lots of young children on our way, so it's definitely a family-friendly activity.

There's plenty of parking available at the park, so don't stress. Plus, there's space for you to enjoy a picnic or a bite from the Falls Cafe.

On your way out, stop off at Grandpa's Shed — a unique antique and old wares shop that offers basically anything you could ever think of.

From glass and tableware to tools and signs, Grandpa's Shed has it all. It's such a fun spot to lose yourself as you browse the aisles.

We popped into the nearby Robertson for lunch, in part because I wanted to see the Big Potato (and yes, that's exactly what it sounds like).

Robertson Public House is a great spot for lunch. It's family-friendly, has a lovely bright interior and great outdoor seating.

We enjoyed a burger, schnitzel and a pint in the sun after our walk. And the food was absolutely delicious — the chips were unreal.

But I have to admit, I'm still kicking myself for not ordering the garlic bread. It looked divine on the table next to us, and the smell was something dreams are made of. Across the road, you will find the big potato. Say cheese and enjoy.

There's plenty to do in and around Robertson, too! Check out the cheese factory or the famous pie shop if you have space for more food, or wander around Belmore Falls or the Robertson Nature Reserve.

On our final day, we headed to Kangaroo Valley, and I fell in love. There was a hum to the town as everyone got out to enjoy the sunshine.

We started with Mannings Lookout for those clifftop views over the valley, then wandered along the main street.

The town is home to Australia's last surviving wooden suspension bridge and some beautiful heritage-listed buildings. Pop in to the countless quirky storefronts — notable mentions to The Nostalgia Factory and Halcyon Bookshop; I love a bookstore or knick-knack shop that's packed full of character.

For lunch, head to The Friendly Inn for a bite right in town, or check out The General Cafe or Kangaroo Valley Bakehouse (my boyfriend grabbed a pie from here and raved about it — big praise from a Kiwi with high pie standards).

We got chatting to some lovely people at the table next to us as they enjoyed their custard tart, and they sent us up to the peak of Cambewarra Mountain.

Offering stunning views across Shoalhaven, the spot is also home to The Lookout, a beautiful café perched atop the summit. Make sure you leave room for a bite — the scones looked delightful.

On the way home, we swung through Berry, another favourite NSW destination of mine for its homey feel and quirky shops. It's by far my favourite stopover town. Grab some lunch at Milkwood Bakery and don't skip the iconic Berry Donut Van for cinnamon donuts, of course.

The verdict?

This little corner of NSW has completely stolen my heart. There's something magical about a place that can make you feel so refreshed and recharged in just a weekend.

Stunning scenery, delicious food, quirky shops and that peaceful country vibe that makes you remember why you needed to escape the city in the first place.

Pack your bags, grab your camera, and prepare to fall in love with one of NSW's most charming corners. You won't regret it.

Trust me, your future self will thank you for booking this trip. I'm already counting down the days until my next visit.
