Emma Watson has flat out refused to wear a traditional princess item in Beauty and the Beast.

If there is anyone who will strive to re-work a character into one who is isn’t restricted by the confines of gender, it’s Emma Watson.

Starring in one of the more anticipated films of next year, a modern take on cult-classic Beauty and The Beast, Watson revealed to Entertainment Weekly that she refused to wear a corset under her character’s iconic yellow dress because she wanted to play an “active” princess and felt a corset could restrict her movement.

Movement, for 26-year-old Watson, was key to her character being able to express herself and do justice to the storyline.

“I really embraced working on the dress, making sure that it was utterly whimsical, and magical,” she told Entertainment Weekly.

“The scene that I wear that dress in, and I have that dance in, it really tells the story of Beast and Belle falling in love. You know, we don’t have a huge amount of time in the story to tell that story. The dance, for me, is really where the audience starts to see it happening and starts knowing that it is happening.”

It’s not the only way Watson’s character has evolved in the film’s adaption.

While the 1991 Disney animation saw Belle’s father Maurice as the family inventor and Belle spending all her days reading, the new adaption will see Belle take on her father’s role.

“In the animated movie, it’s her father who is the inventor, and we actually co-opted that for Belle,” Watson said about the decision to allow her character to evolve.

“I was like, ‘Well, there was never very much information or detail at the beginning of the story as to why Belle didn’t fit in, other than she liked books. Also what is she doing with her time?’ So, we created a backstory for her, which was that she had invented a kind of washing machine, so that, instead of doing laundry, she could sit and use that time to read instead. So, yeah, we made Belle an inventor.”

The film is due for release early next year, but the teaser is anything to go by, fans will be jumping at the chance to watch the re-make. The teaser was watched 91.8 million times in the first 24 hours of its release, taking the record from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
