I’m always curious about the products makeup artists really use.
The best way to find out? Head backstage at a fashion show. It’s chaotic, high pressure and the products used really need to deliver. A makeup pressure test, if you will, for all the Masterchef fans out there.
Last week I did exactly that, heading behind the scenes at Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival.
And if there was one product Priceline Makeup Director Sarah Laidlaw swore by for your-skin-but-better makeup, it was this bad boy.
Egyptian Magic All Purpose Skin Cream.
It has ‘Magic’ in its name and it’s well justified. The multi-purpose cream has approximately 6754 purpose (alright, maybe not quite that many) making it a favourite of celebrities and makeup experts alike.
It can treat acne, burns, scars and eczema as well as be used head to toe to hydrate and repair skin, including as a moisturiser, lip balm, eye cream and hair mask, to name just a few ways.
First launched in 1991, it’s based on the ancient Egyptian formula that women living around the same time as Cleopatra used to keep their skin glowing. It’s made from just six natural ingredients – olive oil, beeswax, bee propolis, bee pollen, royal jelly and honey.
Kate Hudson, Lauren Conrad and Victoria’s Secret Angel Behati Prinsloo are just some of the celebrity fans.
It was a key product Sarah used before the VAMFF Graduate Showcase to create ‘glossy skin’.

“Egyptian Magic really creates beautiful skin… It’s about adding it in the right places,” she told Mamamia.
She advised avoiding the under the eye and around the tear duct which can look “kind of weird” and instead focussing on outside of the brow.
She applied it over the makeup base with her fingers, resulting in a healthy-looking, glossy finish.
