Donald Trump attacks Meryl Streep after her powerful Golden Globes speech.

It was the speech that stopped the Golden Globes: respected actress Meryl Streep used her acceptance speech for the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille award at the 2017 ceremony to take US President-elect to task.

During her speech, Streep said there was one performance throughout the year that “stunned” her.

“It sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good; there was nothing good about it, but it was effective and it did its job. It made its intended audience laugh and show their teeth,” she said.

"It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in the country imitated a disabled reporter; someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back.

"It kind of broke my heart when I saw it, and I still can't get it out of my head because it wasn't in a movie, it was real life," Streep continued.

Just as the world expected, Trump launched a scathing Twitter attack in response to the actress' speech.

"Meryl Streep, one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood, doesn't know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes," he began.

"She is a Hillary flunky who lost big."

We'll take this opportunity to point out that the 67-year-old actress is widely considered to be one of the greatest-living actors of all time, having been nominated for 19 Oscars and 30 Golden Globes during her career, which has spanned over five decades.

'Overrated' she most certainly is not.

Trump also tweeted that he had never "mocked" a disabled reporter - "would never do that," he wrote - but was simply "showing him 'groveling'".

"Just more very dishonest media!" he continued.

Of course, the Internet wasn't about to take Trump's latest 3am Twitter tirade sitting down, and the hashtag "#ThingsTrumpThinksAreOverrated" was born.
