On Saturday, Destiny was allegedly set on fire. A man has been charged with attempted murder.

Destiny Otton-Rakuraku was living a full life when it was torn apart by an alleged act of violence on the weekend.

A loving mother to two teenage sons, the eldest daughter in a family of seven, and a dedicated support worker, she wrote on her Instagram that she had been "living her best life."

However, on Saturday, everything changed for the 34-year-old.

Police allege that a 36-year-old man attempted to murder Otton-Rakuraku in the early hours of the morning on January 18.

He has since been identified as Queensland resident, Mr Renata Edward Manning. It is believed the man was known to her.

According to a statement, police and emergency services were called to the residence in Kingston after reports of an altercation between a man and a woman.

Police allege that the man poured accelerant on Otton-Rakuraku and lit her on fire, with her suffering extensive burns as a result, per the Courier Mail.

Otton-Rakuraku is now in a serious condition at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, being treated in the ICU, as friends and family rally around her.

Her cousin Blake Timu told the Courier-Mail that her condition is 'inhumane', adding that it's "terrifying to see her almost lifeless."

Another family member told the New Zealand Herald that she has burns to 50 per cent of her body.

A GoFundMe has been set up for Otton-Rakuraku, alleging that she was "doused in petrol and lit on fire in her own home," according to the page.

It describes her as a "natural giving heart who didn't deserve what has happened to her", adding that she works multiple jobs and studies in order to achieve her goals.

The GoFundMe organiser, Monique Kidd, identified herself as the best friend of Otton-Rakuraku's mother, Alison.

"As a mother she is doing everything she can to stay strong for her family during this incredibly difficult journey," said Kidd.

"As you can imagine, the unbearable pain that has been put on the family, it is my hope that enough funds will be raised to take some stress off," Kidd wrote on the fundraiser

Alison Rakuraku also spoke to 7News, saying that she was "devastated and numb".

"She's strong, we will be strong for our girl," she added.

Manning has since been charged with one count of attempted murder, assault occasioning bodily harm and three counts of common assault. Police refused bail.

The case was heard yesterday, January 20 in Beenleigh Magistrates Court, but Manning did not appear.

He has not applied for bail and remains in custody.

Meanwhile, crime scenes have been established at the home, a park and the Kingston train station.

The incident came hours before Australia's Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Commissioner Micaela Cronin opened a solemn vigil to honour the 87 women who lost their lives to gender-based violence in 2024.

The vigil outside the South Australian parliament included a call for urgent action to end gender-based violence.

"Each of the women lost was a mother, sister, daughter and friend," Ms Cronin said.

"Their lives were cut short by gender-based violence, and we honour their memory at this vigil."

Queensland Premier, David Crisafulli, said that the state was in mourning over the alleged offence against Otton-Rakuraku.

"To everyone, to her family, to her neighbours, to the first responders, to every Queenslander: these are the kind of incidents that rock communities, and our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved," Crisafulli said.

Over $34,000 has been raised to go towards Destiny's recovery over the weekend.

"All the funds raised will be used towards Destiny's medical bills, after care, recovery, necessary resources, her rent, her children, pets, her family to travel backwards & forwards, parking fees and extra unforeseen expenses," said Kidd.

The alleged incident sheds a light on the state of violence in Australia. According to Sherele Moody's Femicide Watch, there are two other women currently in hospital related to domestic violence offences.

"The other women are Linley Anyos, who was shot in the back, and an as-yet unidentified woman who was also almost burnt to death. She was hurt in Townsville at the end of December," she writes.

Moody memorialises the women and children lost to violence, which you can view on The RED HEART Campaign.
