This country only just made bestiality illegal. In 2015.

Well, this is strange.

We’ve all heard of a few bizarre laws that are still on the books and probably shouldn’t be.

In Florida, it is illegal to pass wind in a public place after 6pm on Thursdays and believe it or not, flushing the toilet after 10pm is supposedly illegal in Switzerland.

But, when we heard that this Danish law was NOT on the books we were, well, outraged.

This week, Denmark has finally passed a law forbidding bestiality. The law has come about as a reaction to the rise of animal sex shows, clubs and even brothels frequented by tourists who had chosen to take advantage of the Nordic country’s bizarre oversight.

Germany, Norway, Sweden and Britain previously banned bestiality.

The law amends a previous ban, which only stated intercourse with animals was illegal if it ‘harmed’ the animal.

But Danish agricultural minister Dan Jorgensen, rightly stated in an opinion piece that, “the current legislation does not protect the animals enough.”

Because after all, “It’s hard to prove that an animal suffers when a human has sexual intercourse with it, and that is why we must give the animal the benefit of the doubt.”

We hear you Dan.

In a report, the Danish Ethical Council for Animals said, ‘There are frequent reports of the occurrence of organised animal sex shows, clubs and animal brothels in Denmark’.

In fact, it has been reported that pet owners have been known to openly advertise their pets’ services ‘for sale’, for a sum between $110 and $220, depending upon what service was required.

The law will take effect July 1.

But it gets even worse. According to a 2011 Justice Ministry report, 17 percent of Danish veterinarians surveyed believed an animal they treated had previously been subjected to intercourse with a human.

Under the new law, those found guilty of engaging in sexual relations with an animal will face hefty fines and prison terms.

Sadly, in Europe, bestiality is still legal in Finland, Romania and Hungary. Who knew?
