Rebecca Loos claims she woke up smiling after a night with David Beckham. Then the truth dawned on her.

Two decades ago, Rebecca Loos worked as David Beckham's personal assistant while the footballer was playing for Real Madrid in Spain. When she was let go from the position, she claimed she and David had engaged in a four-month affair.

Now, Rebecca has revealed why she went public with her claims all those years ago, admitting that it was somewhat driven by the sense of injustice and hurt she felt at the time.

"I just kind of felt the way he treated me was very unfair, what he was getting away with and that two-faced life. And I know how much his image means to him. I just kind of wanted to make him feel some pain too," Rebecca said in a new interview with 60 Minutes.

In particular, David's persistent denial of the affair motivated her to tell her side of the story.

"But I think the fact that he referred to my claims as 'ludicrous', that just pissed me off even more. It makes you want to stand up for yourself and it makes you want to keep coming forward," she said.

Rebecca went on to say that at the time, she had strong feelings for David, and even detailed the morning after the first time they were intimate.

"I woke up with the biggest smile on my face," she recalled.

"I also woke up thinking, 'Oh, you know, I'm in their room'… it didn't feel very right at the same time that I had this big smile on my face."

Over 20 years later, Rebecca said that there were gendered double standards in the media's portrayal of the situation which blamed her and David's wife, Victoria, but not David himself.

"There were never horrible stories about him," she said. "He was golden balls. He was the man. Pat him on the back, where, 'Hey, good for you.' Nothing changed in his life, but it was all Victoria's fault. My fault. All the blame was on us."

Rebecca said that while she attempted to appear "brave and strong" throughout the scandal, it was a traumatic experience.

"I went up against England's favourite son, so it was a harsh environment to go up against," she explained. "I think all of that impacted my mental health in a way that it was quite traumatic."

Despite all the noise and conflicting accounts, Rebecca maintained that she has always been truthful about what happened.

"I have stuck to the truth. I've never exaggerated, I've never lied about a single thing. Why? Because I'm going up against the strongest, most powerful couple in the media, who have all the money in the world for the best PR, the best lawyers. And all I had on my side was the truth," she said.

Back in January, Rebecca spoke out about her claims — calling the decision a "f**k you" to David.

During an episode of the Anything Goes podcast, host James English asked Rebecca if the footballer had been upfront with her about the "fling", if she still would have shared her story publicly.

"Or do you think you did it because you were hurt as well?" the podcast host asked.

"I was hurt," Rebecca, 47, confirmed. "Me going public was a 'f**k you mate' for treating me like that. Big time. It was. I don't care how powerful you are, how much money you have. It's not okay."

While Rebecca had "strong feelings" for David, she said she "wouldn't call them love".

The former personal assistant also claimed that journalists were contacting her about the affair and, while she knew the allegations would cause a stir, Rebecca didn't realise just how much scrutiny she would face.

"I naively thought people would appreciate somebody being honest and telling the truth. But people don't. They want to believe the fairytale," she said.

"I knew it was going to be big, I didn't realise I'd get as much hatred as I got back then."

At the time of Rebecca's initial claims, David called the story "ludicrous", emphasising that he was "very happily married" to Victoria Beckham.

"During the past few months I have become accustomed to reading more and more ludicrous stories about my private life," he said in a statement.

"The simple truth is that I am very happily married. I have a wonderful wife and two very special kids. There is nothing any third party can do to change these facts."

David married Victoria Beckham in 1999; they now share four children together — Brooklyn, 25, Romeo, 22, Cruz, 19, and 13-year-old Harper.

In October 2023, the couple readdressed the alleged affair in their Netflix documentary Beckham. Victoria deemed it the "unhappiest time of [her] life".

"100 per cent, it was the hardest period for us," the former Spice Girl said during the four-part docu-series.

"Because it felt like the world was against us, and here's the thing — we were against each other if I'm being completely honest. I can't even begin to tell you how hard it was. How it affected me," she said.

The 50-year-old called the media attention a "circus" and confessed she resented David at the time.

Despite the allegations being made towards the now-49-year-old, Victoria said that — more often than not — she was the one marked as "the villain".

David, meanwhile, said it felt like they were "drowning" amid the affair rumours.

"There was some horrible stories that were difficult to deal with. It was the first time that me and Victoria had been put under that kind of pressure in our marriage," he said.

When asked how he and Victoria survived the turbulent time, David replied: "I don't know."

"I don't know how we got through it in all honesty. Victoria is everything to me. To see her hurt was incredibly difficult. But we're fighters, and at that time we needed to fight for each other and fight for our family. What we had was worth fighting for. Ultimately it's our private life," he said.

In response to David's comments in the docu-series, Rebecca accused the footballer of playing the victim.

"It's all 'poor me'," she told the Mail on Sunday. "He needs to take responsibility.

"He can say whatever he likes, of course, and I understand he has an image to preserve, but he is portraying himself as the victim and he's making me look like a liar, like I've made up these stories.

"He is indirectly suggesting that I'm the one who has made Victoria suffer," she added.
