NRL star's dark and difficult past makes his latest achievement even more impressive.

This week NRL star Darius Boyd was named captain of the Brisbane Broncos.

His wife, Kayla Boyd, posted her gushing congratulations alongside a family picture on Instagram with their daughter, Willow.

“There is no amount of heartfelt speech that can genuinely depict how insanely proud I am of this man,” she said.

The pair are back on top after going through hell.

In January, Kayla wrote about “the worst 12 months of her life”, following a miscarriage and a family death.

Over two years ago, Darius also hit “rock bottom” after Kayla had left him.

He decided had to make a change from his dark days, face his difficult past and self-admitted into a hospital in July 2014.

Darius attended a three-week lock down rehab program and was diagnosed with depression.

“Until you hit a place where you think you can’t go anymore, rock bottom, that’s when you really know you need to do something,” he told the The Telegraph after his therapy.

The then 27-year-old came to the realisation that he’d been pushing his loved ones away.

“To be honest it was my wife (Kayla), she said she’d had enough, she said it wasn’t something that she wanted to stick around for and be a part of in that relationship,” Boyd reportedly said on Triple M’s Dead Set Legends program.

“It wasn’t enjoyable for her, and even myself, I wasn’t happy. I was angry, I wasn’t sure what was wrong or why I was feeling the way I was feeling or why I was acting the way I was acting.

“Something needed to change. Her leaving was the last straw that I really needed to change something and do something.”

Two and a half years on, Darius and Kayla have a one-year-old daughter and a bright future ahead of them.

The NRL star says he couldn’t have recovered, let alone become captain, without his wife’s support.

“She gave me that light at the end of the tunnel, she was very supportive through the process … she visited me and kept in contact with me and kept that support there which helped me get to where I am today.”
