As someone who often has to deal with dandruff, if you've ever sat through an awkward hair appointment, felt self-conscious about visible flakes or wondered why nothing seems to work, you're definitely not alone.

After a few TikTok scrolls and convincing quick-fix remedies, it can be easy to think the solution is just one at-home treatment away (we've all been there). But the truth is, many of us are "treating" dandruff based on some pretty outdated myths.

Spoiler: what you've heard about dandruff being only about dryness or a sign of dirty hair, and what works to keep it under control, is actually way off.

So let's break down some of those misconceptions and figure out what's fact, what's total fiction and what will actually support your scalp health, shall we?

Myth 1: Dandruff only happens when your scalp is dry.

It can be really tempting to reach for the moisturising scalp products when flakes pop up, but dryness is only part of the story. The truth is, dandruff is most commonly linked to a microbe imbalance on your scalp. For many of us, this triggers irritation, itchiness and flaking even if the scalp is oily, not dry.

This is where Head & Shoulders comes in — their formulas work to rebalance and soothe the scalp. And as someone who has been using Head & Shoulders for years to deal with my annoying dandruff, I can vouch for how helpful their products have been.

Their range is dermatologically tested for daily use and clinically proven to provide up to 100 per cent protection from dandruff and prevent it from coming back.

Myth 2: Dandruff can be permanently cured.

The idea that you can permanently cure dandruff is… well, a total lie. As much as we wish there were a magical potion that banished those pesky flakes forever, the truth is a little less glamorous — and a lot more annoying. Dandruff loves to make a comeback just when you think you've got it under control.

But here's the silver lining: with the right routine, you can keep it firmly in check. Just don't fall for anyone promising a "permanent cure" — because unfortunately, it doesn't exist. Consistency is your scalp's best friend, not miracles.

Myth 3: Dandruff is a sign of poor hygiene.

Let's clear this up: dandruff doesn't mean you're skipping shampoo days or that your hair is "dirty". The actual cause is a natural response to microbe imbalance, not skipping a hair wash.

In fact, excessive washing or harsh scrubbing can sometimes make flaking and irritation even worse. Flakes are all about your scalp's sensitivity, not your shower habits.

Myth 4: All dandruff is the same.

Not even close. There's dry skin dandruff (light, tiny flakes), oily skin dandruff (larger, yellowish flakes that stick) and even flaking caused by underlying skin conditions like eczema.

Understanding which type you have can help you choose the right solution — and explains why products work for some people and not others. If your flakes are sore or persist, always consider chatting to a dermatologist.

Myth 5: Physical exfoliation makes dandruff worse.

If you're wielding a hard brush or gritty scrub, this might be true — physical exfoliation can aggravate your scalp skin and disrupt follicles, making flaking and sensitivity worse. But gentle exfoliation with proven ingredients (think salicylic acid) can help dissolve buildup and promote a balanced scalp environment. Choose chemical, not physical, exfoliation — and always go gentle.

Myth 6: Washing your hair less will get rid of flakes.

"Hair training" is trending, but stretching out washes can backfire for dandruff-prone scalps. Infrequent washing may lead to product, oil and skin cell buildup — adding to irritation. Regular cleansing with a gentle, scalp-friendly formula keeps things balanced and reduces flaking. If you're dealing with persistent flakes, more frequent, gentle washing (not less) is usually better.

Myth 7: Home remedies like vinegar always fix it.

Apple cider vinegar, coconut oil, tea rinses… most DIY treatments are popular, but rarely clinically proven. While some may help with scalp pH or brief itch relief, they don't address the root cause: microbe imbalance.

The bottom line is dandruff is annoying, yes, but it's manageable — especially when you know what's really going on. So ignore the outdated advice and find a routine that works with your scalp's needs instead. You (and your hair) deserve nothing less.
