'Something snapped.' Why Julie Goodwin pulled out of Dancing with the Stars.

Julie Goodwin became a household name in Australia after winning the first season of MasterChefbut her latest two-step into reality TV has potentially ended before it even began.

Goodwin had to withdraw from the first episode of Dancing With The Stars after suffering an injury. 

The famous chef was set to make her dance floor debut, but during rehearsals with partner Andrey Gorbunov, she sustained a serious leg injury and under doctor's orders she had to pull out of the premiere. 

"I was jumping on poor Andrey here," she told DWTS host Sonia Kruger. "Something snapped and fortunately, it was my leg and not his back. It was my calf muscle."

The 53-year-old mum has since undergone treatment in hospital. Goodwin told the hosts on the premiere she hopes that from resting her leg under her doctor's guidance that she can return to the show by the third episode. 

"It’s going to be all right. We’re going to be all right. Bedazzle the moon boot and away we'll go," she said.

In an Instagram statement, she elaborated further on the injury. "After more than five weeks of 40+ hours pw [per week] training, this injury was devastating," she wrote.

"When scans came back they showed two serious tears in the calf. Initial advice was to withdraw. But watch this space, because I never quit easily and I’ll be doing everything in my power, and the power of the medical professionals, to get back on the floor. Send us luck and positive energy please. We wanna dance, dammit!"

Goodwin is one of 12 celebrities who are stepping into dance shoes for the first time. The 2024 line-up for Dancing with the Stars features fellow MasterChef alum Hayden Quinn, Australian icon Lisa McCune, Better Homes and Gardens' Adam Dovile, SAS Australia's Ant Middleton, controversial AFL player Ben Cousins, Home and Away's James Stewart, model Nadia Bartel, comedian Nikki Osborne, Olympian Nova Peris, singer Samantha Jade and AFL legend Shane Crawford.

Earlier this year, Goodwin released her memoir Your Time Starts Now, where she shared her experiences with finding instant fame from MasterChef, along with her mental health and addiction struggles over the years.
