Cyclone Ita will ‘wipe out’ Cooktown
Queensland is facing a natural disaster with Cyclone Ita about to bear down on the state as category 5 storm. The powerful cyclone is now being compared to Typhoon Haiyan which destroyed areas of the Philippines and south-east Asia last year, killing thousands. Ita is expected to hit the coast at 5pm today, however strong 300km/h winds have already begun lashing the state. Warnings are currently issued from Lockhart River to Innisfail, including Port Douglas, Cooktown and Cairns. Cooktown mayor, Peter Scott, said in a briefing this morning that “Cooktown as we know it today will not be the same tomorrow.” Residents have already been warned that flying debris will become a deadly risk.
Abbott confident 'We've found the black box'.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has said that it's a race against time to find the box because the signal has already begun to fade. Mr Abbott will be meeting personally with Chinese President Xi Jinping this afternoon in Beijing to discuss their latest findings and what they believe to be the location of the black box. "We have very much narrowed down the search area...we have now had a series of detections, some for quite a long period of time. We are hoping to get as much information as we can before the signals finally expire," said Mr Abbott.
