Think you're using sunscreen correctly? Here's what might surprise you.

Think you're across sunscreen? Most of us are pretty good at chucking it on… but the small things we overlook can make a big difference to how protected we actually are. Team that with the logistics of getting sunscreen on little moving bodies, reapplying between sports, keeping everyone covered without a full production in the change rooms… and that's when it can easily fall over.

Here are the surprising things you need to know about sunscreen this summer — plus how busy, active families can actually keep up with it:

1. Not reapplying is the biggie.

Let's start with the most common sunscreen slip‑up: putting it on once and calling it a day. Sunscreen needs to be reapplied every two hours (20 minutes before heading outdoors), especially if you're swimming, sweating or towel‑drying, because those things can wear it away and reduce the level of protection on your skin.

That's where simpler formats come in for on‑the‑go families. Banana Boat has launched its new Sport SmartMist Sunscreen Spray SPF 50+ and Kids SmartMist Sunscreen Spray SPF 50+, a spray format designed to help make sun protection simpler and lower fuss for active households.

The SmartMist range features a Smart Control Spray with two spray settings: a long spray for areas like arms, legs and backs, and a short spray that helps you target smaller spots such as ears, necks and feet. The lightweight spray is non-greasy and fast absorbing for an easier application in those "everyone's just trying to get out the door" moments.

Banana Boat has launched the SmartMist products in partnership with ambassador and sun safety advocate Ash Barty, who knows firsthand how important sun protection is after a tennis career spent outdoors and now spending time wrangling kids under the Australian sun.

2. You need to apply before you go outside.

One thing people are often surprised by: sunscreen isn't a "last step at the beach" product. It needs time on the skin before you're in direct sun so it can form an even, protective layer.

A useful rule of thumb is to put it on 20 minutes before heading outdoors, whether that's the school run, kids' sport or a long walk to the café. Treat sunscreen like part of the getting ready process — brushing teeth, getting dressed, sunscreen on — so you're not relying on a rushed, patchy application in the car park.

Having a "sunscreen station" by the front door or permanently in the beach bag can also reduce the mental load, because you're not hunting for a half empty tube every time the UV climbs.

3. Most of us miss the same spots.

Even when we think we've covered every inch, there are a few classic "oops" areas that get forgotten. Commonly skipped spots include the tops of feet, the scalp hairline, ears, back of the neck, and behind the knees — all areas that can burn easily and are often directly exposed.

For kids, wiggly limbs and hats going on and off make it even easier to miss those little pockets of skin. Building a quick mental checklist — face, ears, neck, shoulders, arms, hands, tummy and back, legs, tops of feet – can help make full‑body coverage feel more realistic on a busy morning.

4. The amount you use really matters.

Sunscreen works best when it's applied generously, but many people use far less than recommended. Using too little can significantly reduce the practical level of protection you're getting, even if the product is labelled SPF 50+.

A handy visual: for lotion formulas on the body, aim for around a teaspoon for each limb, a teaspoon each for front and back of the torso, and half a teaspoon for face, neck and ears. For spray formats, make sure you're spraying until the skin looks and feels evenly coated, then rubbing it in to help ensure coverage.

5. Water, sweat and towels change everything.

"Water resistant" on a sunscreen label does not mean "doesn't budge all day no matter what you're doing". Swimming, sweating during sport or wiping off with a towel all affect the protective film sitting on the skin.

That's why reapplication after swimming and heavy sweating is key, even with high SPF products. For families at the beach, pool or park, it can help to tie reapplication to a routine — for example, every break for snacks, every few overs of backyard cricket, or each time everyone comes out of the water.

6. Cloudy days still count.

It can feel odd to reach for sunscreen on a grey, overcast day, but UV doesn't take time off when the clouds roll in. UV levels can still be high enough to cause damage even when it doesn't look particularly "sunny".

A helpful habit is to think in terms of the UV index rather than temperature alone. In the Australian summer, that often means SPF is relevant most days you're spending time outside, whether you're at the beach or headed down the street to pick up a few groceries.

7. Clothing, shade and hats are still important.

Another thing people sometimes overlook is that sunscreen is just one part of the picture. It works best when it's teamed with other forms of sun protection rather than trying to do all the heavy lifting by itself.

Think of it as part of a bundle: broad‑brimmed hats, sunglasses, shade where you can find or create it, and UV‑protective clothing, especially for kids who spend long stretches outdoors.

Always read the label and follow the directions for use. Wear protective clothing, a hat and sunglasses in addition to sunscreen. Reapply frequently every 2 hours or more often when sweating and immediately after swimming or using a towel. Avoid prolonged high-risk sun exposure.
