If you've been anywhere near TikTok lately, you've probably seen those oddly satisfying videos of people peeling what looks like a second skin off their face. You know the ones. Big American Psycho energy.

Watch: Speaking of beauty, here's how to use a lipstick for a full face of makeup. Post continues below.

They're usually filmed in someone's bathroom at 6am, and involve some kind of clear, rubbery mask that peels off in one satisfying piece.

While the Medicube Age-R Collagen Mask seems to be the most popular version doing the rounds, I stumbled across a more affordable dupe on Amazon — the Hoygi Collagen Night Wrapping Mask. At $17, I simply had to investigate.

What is the Hoygi Collagen Night Wrapping Mask?

This K-Beauty overnight mask promises to deliver plump, hydrated skin while you sleep. It contains ingredients like glycerin and ceramides (good stuff for dry skin like mine), along with — you guessed it — collagen.

Here's what it looks like, for the uninitiated:

Quick science-y bit: While the product claims to deliver collagen to your skin, I should mention I'm a tad sceptical about this. From what our beauty experts have discussed on You Beauty's The Formula, collagen molecules are typically too large to be properly absorbed by the skin. But! More on that later.

How did you go with it?

After cleansing my face, I applied the mask using the handy little spatula that it comes with. First observation: the consistency is runnier than expected. Like, significantly runnier.

Side note: The tube wasn't completely full when I opened it (???) — I had to peel off the seal thing and there was definitely some... empty space in there. Interesting.

The directions say it takes about 15 minutes to dry, but I found that mine was still tacky in places after 30 minutes.

Remember that scene in Mrs Doubtfire where Robin Williams face-plants into the cake? That's kind of how I felt going to bed with this mask on. While it didn't transfer onto my pillowcase (impressive), it felt... a little intense.

Plot twist: I woke up during the night because the mask felt uncomfortably tight around my mouth. I ended up peeling off that section, only to wake up again because the mask was going up my nose when I breathed in.

Yay!

When it came to the removal the next morning, the mask didn't exactly peel off all in one perfect piece — it came close, but I think I applied it too thinly in some areas, which meant I had to remove it in tiny, decidedly un-satisfying pieces around my hairline.

Word of warning: be careful around your eyes! I went a bit too close and removing it was... spicy.

The good news? Any stubborn bits washed off easily with water.

The result? Despite the overnight discomfort (beauty is pain, right?), I was genuinely impressed with the results. My sensitive skin showed no signs of irritation or redness — in fact, it did quite the opposite.

My skin felt incredibly hydrated, soft, smooth and looked plumper, especially around my eye area. I also noticed my skin looked less red than usual, especially around my nose.

While the effects were temporary (most were gone by the end of the day), the hydration and smoothness stuck around. Oh! And unsure if this is because the mask potentially exfoliated a whole layer off my face (including hair), but my makeup applied like a dream.

The verdict.

Would I use it again? Yes, but with some teeny tweaks. Next time I'd apply a thicker layer and avoid the eye area. I'd also maybe chuck it on during the day when I'm working from home instead of sleeping in it, because it was a little tight and uncomfy to have on at night.

Is it worth $17? If you're looking for a quick skin boost before an event, absolutely. While I'm not convinced about the collagen claims, the hydrating and plumping effects are legit.

Just maybe don't plan on getting your best beauty sleep the night you use it. And if you're hoping for that satisfying one-piece peel-off moment for your TikTok... manage your expectations.
