A TV star has spoken out about his transgender daughter in the most beautiful way.

He’s a comedian. He’s appeared on the British and American improvisation show Whose Line is it Anyway? You might know him from The Drew Carey Show. And now, Colin Mochrie, has spoken out about his transgender daughter in the most beautiful way.

He took to Twitter to ask the question: If my 90-year-old mother-in-law, and my 87-year-old mother can love and accept my transgender daughter, I wonder why some people who are younger cannot?

My 90-yr-old mother-in-law and 87-yr-old mother love and acceptance of our trans daughter warms me. Wonder why some who are younger can’t.

The response has been phenomenal.

Mochrie’s Tweet has received more than 15,000 likes and more than 5,000 re-tweets.

Mochrie’s message is beautiful and helpful. Most of all, it’s supportive of a group of people who are too often brushed aside and misunderstood.

“That day [of the Tweet] there just seemed to be a lot of negativity about,” Mochrie told the television program ET Canada. 

“I thought this wold be a nice little thing about acceptance.”

He asked his daughter Kinley, 26, if she wouldn’t mind him sharing the Tweet.

“I didn’t expect it to blow up the way it did,” Mochrie said.

Kinley’s transformation began last April. She chose the name with her parent’s help.

“I said to my parents; ‘I would love to know what name you like and what you would call me now’,” Kinley told EM Canada. “They came back with a list of 20 names. Slowly, we narrowed it down to about five. There was something about ‘Kinley’.”

Mochrie’s response to his daughter’s journey, and parenting in general, is an attitude we can all learn from.

“This is my child. This is the exact same person with a new coat,” Mochrie said. “When you have a child all you want for your child is for them to be safe and happy and better than you are.”
