If you have coeliac disease, chances are you know know all too well the frustration of going out for pizza night with your friends… and not being able to eat anything on the menu. Unfortunately, the pain and discomfort associated with the condition is simply not worth the deliciousness of that crispy, cheese-coated crust.
Coeliac disease is an auto-immune condition which can cause debilitating pain, nausea, constipation, anaemia and fatigue following the consumption of gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye and barley. There is currently no ‘cure’ for the disease; a restricted diet will allow sufferers to manage their symptoms.

However, respite could soon be possible. Scientists from the University of Alberta claim to have developed a pill that will allow coeliac sufferers the freedom to eat whatever they want — yes, that includes beer, pizza, bread — without the painful side effects. (Post continues after gallery.)
Why celebrities are gluten free
Made from the yolks from chickens eggs, the supplement prevents the body’s usual inflammatory reactions by preventing its absorption of gliadin — an element in gluten which is thought to be largely responsible for adverse reactions in coeliacs.
“This supplement binds with gluten in the stomach and helps neutralise it, therefore providing defence to the small intestine limiting the damage gladden causes,” Associate Professor from the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Hoon Sunwoo, tells Quartz.

This is big news for coeliac disease sufferers. It’s estimated one in 70 Australians are affected by the condition, although many more are believed to remain undiagnosed.
