It's been 20 years since iconic dance movie Honey. Here's what the stars are up to now.

Twenty years ago the movie Honey was released starring Jessica Alba. Upon its release the whole world began popping and locking, thinking they could break out into spontaneous dance at the shopping centre. Ah, they certainly were simpler times! 

The early 2000s sparked a genre of dance film which garnered incredible popularity amongst millennials and launched a number of actors into superstardom. 

Let’s take a look at what the cast of Honey have been up to over the past two decades.

Jessica Alba: Honey Daniels.

In her own words, Jessica Alba was at the top of her career when she bowed out of the industry following the birth of her daughter Honor in 2008, five years after Honey.

"I had this real moment of, I want to live, and thrive, and spend as much time with this little person that I'm bringing into the world as possible and stay,” she told Romper in 2021, after explaining how she suffered from chronic illness as a child.

“So, my health matters. I want this little person to be healthy. And it's really freaking hard to be happy when you don't have your health."

Alba also assured the publication she didn’t retire out of fear of missing out on roles. "Frankly, I was at the top of my career," she said. She wasn’t wrong. Alba played lead roles in Fantastic Four’s franchises, Machete and Sin City, too.

"I couldn't go back to what I was doing before and be authentic. I just couldn't. I didn't care about it the same way," she told the publication.

It didn’t come as a shock when Alba traded scripts for eco-conscious soaps. In 2012, she launched her baby product brand The Honest Company, after her daughter Honor broke out in hives from washing detergent. 

Alba and her hubby Cash Warren are parents to three children, Honor, 15, Haven, 11, and Hart, five.

Romeo Miller: Benny.

Since Honey, Romeo Miller has dabbled in acting, but has stuck to more low-budget films like 2022’s A Miracle Before Christmas, and Who Is Christmas Eve in 2021.

What’s most important to the 33-year-old is parenting with his fiancé, Drew Sangster.

“My tribe is growing,” Miller shared in March, 2023. “I introduce to you my fearless, intuitive, and ingenious daughter; WINTER SNOH MILLER! My heart is so full knowing that my girls will have each other as they grow.”

Miller added, “I’ve accomplished a lot of things in my life, but becoming a father is by far the best and most fulfilling.”

Miller welcomed his first daughter, River Rose on Valentine’s Day, 2022.

Mekhi Phifer: Chaz.

A year before scoring the role of Chaz, Honey Daniels’ boyfriend in the cult dance film, Phifer rose to fame starring opposite Eminem in 8 Mile. That same year he made his debut on ER as Dr Greg Pratt, a gig he kept until 2008 the season-14 finale.

Phifer was huge in the ‘90s, but since the late ‘00s he’s kept a low profile. That’s not to say he hasn’t been busy. The 47-year-old hasn’t scored the big blockbusters like he once did, and tends to keep appearances on TV series’ short and sweet, like his guest spots on Chicago PD, The Bobby Brown Story, and Love, Victor.

A father of three, the Insurgent actor said his pared-back career is all strategy. "The way I've designed my career, I pick and [choose] things that aren't stereotypical, that aren't typecasting," he explained to Scene Creek in 2015. "I choose characters that are interesting but different. I love being challenged."

David Moscow: Michael Ellis.

We’re glad to learn David Moscow is nothing like Michael Ellis, the creepy music video director in Honey. 

After appearing in films like Legally Blonde, Numb3rs, This Is Christmas and One Last Night, Moscow tried his hand at writing.

His book Scratch was turned into a documentary series for Prime Video, and has gone on to win awards, too.

The book and doco follows Moscow as he travels the world exploring and uncovering sustainable and traditional hunting, foraging and cooking methods. 

Joy Bryant: Gina.

The ultimate gal pal to Jessica Alba’s Honey, Joy Bryant proved she was a Hollywood star on the rise after being cast as Gina.Since the release of the film Bryant went on to land a role in a number of films including Get Rich or Die Tryin’ alongside rapper 50 Cent. In 2010 she made a move into TV playing Jasmine Trussell in the hit show Parenthood.

As well as acting, Bryant has quite a knack for all things style. In 2014 she launched a range of activewear called Basic Terrain. She collaborated on the collection of sportswear with her husband Dave Pope who she has been married to for 15 years. 

In 2016 she penned an open letter published in Lenny Letter, explaining to the public her decision not to have children. “My womb doesn’t belong to the world. It doesn’t even belong to my husband. It is mine and mine alone, and my womb should be free to live life as MY nature intended. And if that doesn’t include a child, that’s OK, because I’ve got plenty of love to give, and plenty of plans to help make the world a better place through something other than my offspring,” she wrote.

Laurieann Gibson: Katrina.

It’s no surprise that Laurieann Gibson was cast as Honey’s dance arch nemesis Katrina considering the movie is inspired by her life as a world famous choreographer *cue dance battle*!

Gibson has enjoyed an illustrious career in the dance world having worked with some of the biggest stars in the industry including Beyonce, Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga and Alicia Keys. Remember the choreography for Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance video? Yep, that was all the tidy work of Gibson.

In recent years she has continued working as a choreographer and even appeared as a judge on reality TV series So You Think You Can Dance in 2019.

Missy Elliott: As herself

Missy Elliot, a superstar who truly needs no introduction. 

In the years that followed her cameo in Honey, Missy Elliott has gone on to reach icon status despite taking some time off to deal with health issues.

The four-time Grammy winning rapper has gone on to release a number of albums, collaborate with some of the biggest stars in the world and became the first female hip-hop artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023.

Amongst all the accolades, in recent years the 52-year-old has stepped away from the spotlight to manage her Graves’ disease diagnosis which is a hypothyroid disorder.
