When Cassandra Mamone failed to get a rose on Thursday night’s episode of The Bachelor, we were led to believe this was because she was simply too focused and too ambitious when it came to running her business.

Earlier in the episode, we watched the 33-year-old chat with Matt Agnew’s best friend Kate, and their conversation was dominated about the future of her self-titled jewellery label, Cassandra Mamone.

“I’m currently in Adelaide building my business, and I’m so excited for that next chapter,” said Cass.

“I want to expand to Melbourne with my business, that’s in the cards. Essentially longterm goals as well, I’m considering Adelaide, Melbourne, LA,” she continued.

“I don’t know when I want to have kids, as long as it’s before 40 now, or 42.”

Unsurprisingly, we were only shown a snippet of their in-depth conversation, and when Kate reported back to Matt, Cass’ career was once again placed front and centre.

“Had a chat with her, she’s focused on continuing to grow her business,” she said.

“There is a lot of chat about business,” responded Matt, before evicting the jewellery designer at the Rose Ceremony.

Speaking to Mamamia, Cass said that as she watched Thursday’s episode with her colleagues, even she thought it was an odd angle for the producers to take.

“I was watching [the episode] with the girls at work, and they were reading some of the comments that came up under my Instagram photo when they announced my eviction,” she said.

“Someone commented saying, ‘does Matt need a 1950s wife? Why can’t she have her career goals?’ and I was thinking that pretty much sums up how anyone smart would be looking at it, like you can’t have love and have a career.

“That’s just silly obviously. I’m glad there are wise people who can see through editing, and know better.”

In actual fact, Cass’ conversation with Kate was much more in-depth. “They just pulled out the business parts,” she said.

“At the end of the day they need a reason, and a background of why they’re getting rid of someone, and what’s the easiest thing to pick on with me? Well obviously, something I’ve built that’s so big in my life, [but] they obviously depicted it to be more than it actually is,” she said.

“Do I feel like someone should be booted off for having a business? Hell no! Do I think I got booted off because I’m a brunette? Probably more that way.”

Viewers watching at home also complained of Cass’ treatment on the show, especially when compared to Matt’s rigid goal to be married with children in a three to five year time span. While fellow contestant Abbie has come under fire for potentially not being as truthful about her desires to settle down, Cass openly told Kate she wasn’t planning on having children until her late 30s, or early 40s.

Despite this, the jewellery designer maintains her relationship with Matt wasn’t solely confined to shop talk, even though there was definitely an emphasis put on her career.

“I did get a lot of questions on my business, and I am pretty happy to talk about that, it’s fine. It’s a massive part of my life, but I was also cautious of not talking about it too much,” she said.

“At the end of the day I’m trying to build a connection with someone and you do have to tell them about your background and what you do, and I wanted to find out about him.

“Not that my business should have been a focus at all in that, but I felt like there was an underlying theme through it. It’s interesting,” Cass concluded.

Even in the age of reality television, in which hours of footage is manipulated and edited to form a succinct, and drama-filled hour-long narrative, the storyline of a woman who gets dumped because she dares to chase a career and a love life is exasperating to watch.

Because in 2019, we know that simply isn’t true.
