There's a certain sneaker making a comeback. We'll allow it, on one condition.

There's absolutely no question—we are sneaker obsessed when it comes to fashion. And the "it" shoe keeps evolving.

There's been a real shift in recent years. Trainers have shed their purely practical roots, emerging as bold, stylish pieces that are now amongst the most exciting and versatile items you can add to your wardrobe.

The Adidas Samba dominated for ages, then we witnessed the world's exploration of sporting shoes evolve further, with the Puma Speedcat proving equally noteworthy. Recently, the underrated cousin of the Samba, the Adidas SL 72s, have been having their moment of glory.

But there have been some questionable evolutions (in my humble opinion). Like the sneakerina, the awkward lovechild of the ballet slipper and sneaker. Or the Gen Z-fuelled trend of wearing footy boots (with cleats) off the field, for fashion.

And the latest sneaker living in its resurgence era? The humble canvas shoe. Yes, the plain white minimalist shoe that I wore in the 90s is the latest trend to come full circle.

I have fond memories of wearing them with a big-brim hat and an oversized fake sunflower pin. As well as donning a pair of low-top Chuck Taylors with an oversized flannie and corduroy pants. Peak '90s, really.

We've seen celebrities and fashion people wearing canvas sneakers of all styles and colours over the Northern hemisphere summer, which means you're about to feel the urge to buy a pair for Aussie spring/summer.

Natalie Portman was recently seen wearing the classic white Keds Champion canvas sneakers — loved by Emma Stone and Taylor Swift, too — with an oversized T-shirt and sweatpants on the streets of New York while filming. Red canvas sneakers were a fixture at Copenhagen Fashion Week in August, too.

Then there are the low-top and high-top black Converse canvas sneakers a la Olivia Rodrigo, Gigi Hadid's Vans slip-ons, and Jennifer Lawrence's canvas Vans Authentics, which she styles with everything from oversized button-downs and baggy jeans to chic suiting and tailored leather jackets.

Here's the thing with canvas shoes… Traditionally, they haven't been worn with socks.

Canvas isn't exactly known for its breathability, and Australian summers can be brutal. In summer, not even a sockette can save them from getting smelly. Are we setting ourselves up for foot hygiene disasters in the name of fashion?

There's something undeniably nostalgic and effortless about canvas sneakers. They're the ultimate "I'm not trying too hard" shoe. They work with everything from sundresses to tailored trousers, and there's a reason they've been a wardrobe staple in eras past.

A retro black sneaker or a statement colour is also the perfect example of the 'Wrong Shoe' theory, whereby you build an outfit with a shoe you wouldn't ordinarily wear with the clothing — think a canvas shoe with a tailored pant and blazer, or black Converse with feminine lace.

But I think we can all agree that socks with sneakers in summer are mandatory, unless you're willing to up your foot hygiene routine.

If you're a sockette kinda person (Gen Xers and elder millennials, that's us!) and you can commit to keeping your shoes from getting nasty, go forth!

The rest of us, it's time to embrace the Gen Z mid ankle sock and style intentionally with a skirt or dress, or pair with a longer pant where you won't see the socks at all.
