It's the '90s beauty trend we never thought we'd revisit: brown lips are back.

One colour dominated makeup in the ‘90s, and now it’s coming back for your lips with a vengeance.

Believe it or not, brown lipstick has been seen on several celebrities. Which means that maybe, just maybe, it’s cool again.

I haven’t seen such hype around brown lipstick since I was passing around a tube of the Australis good stuff in my Year 8 geography class back in 1995. Yeah… 20 years ago. Excuse me while I go and cry over my lost youth.

OK, I'm back. The brown shades we’ve seen on celebs such as Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez and model Gigi Hadid (who was born in 1995, ugh) look like they were found backstage on the original Melrose Place set – the lipstick colour is chocolate brown, matte and charmingly badass.

So, should you take the plunge and go to town with brown? Well, why not? That’s the best thing about makeup – you can always wipe it off if you’re not keen on it.

If you want an inexpensive entry-point to the brown lipstick look, check out Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick in Coffee Shimmer, $9.95, which can be worn as a single, light coat for a subtle, iced-latte look. I’m wearing it in this video.
