'My ex-girlfriend married my brother. I thought it couldn't get any worse, until this.'

When a couple break up it can be so hard to say goodbye – especially when you’ve gotten close to your ex’s family and now you’re not able to hang out with them either.

But after reading this man’s tale, you might think that’s actually a good thing.

Reddit user TaylorSchwiftyAMA has shared a cautionary tale of the awkwardness that can ensue if your ex does not cut all ties with your family.

Listen: Osher shares brilliant advice of new podcast Love Life.

After dating a woman for a few months, the US man ended the relationship. And expected that to be the end of it.

“However, she adored my family, so she continued to hang around with them – parents, brothers, etc,” he said.

We can only imagine the uncomfortable feeling of knowing your family is close to your ex, but a decade later it only got more awkward for the man.

“Fast forward 10 years, and she’s dating my younger brother, and I have to invite them TO MY WEDDING.”

“Fast forward another year or two, and THEY get married… so now my ex-GF is my sister-in-law.”

For those of us who can't imagine even being in the same room as our ex - let alone having to see them at every holiday and family dinner - this would be peak awkwardness. However, as he explained, there was one final act that made the situation worse.

"I am named after my father (like a junior)... so I should give my son the same, right? Except I decide[d] not to - he can become his own man, instead of living in his dad's [or] granddad's shadow."

So what did his brother and ex-girlfriend think was an appropriate name for their own son? Their brother/ex-boyfriend's name, of course.

"So THEY name their first son TaylorSchwiftyAMA III... ergo my nephew has MY name.

"My ex-GF now shrieks my name every time Lil' Taylor gets into sh*t.

"That is NOT how I wanted that break-up to go AT ALL."

We feel for you, buddy.
