In just a matter of months, Brad Pitt has reinvented himself as 'the good guy'.

For months, we’ve witnessed Brad Pitt’s meticulously engineered Oscars campaign take place on our screens.

From in-depth magazine profiles about his struggles with alcohol to hilarious, self-deprecating acceptance speeches – which some believe were written by a professional speech writer – we’ve truly seen a new side of Brad Pitt this award’s season.

In the past few weeks, we’ve seen a Brad Pitt who is not afraid to crack a joke – even if it’s at the expense of himself.

And we’ve seen an actor who wasn’t shy about proudly supporting his ex-wife, Jennifer Aniston, as she accepted her SAG Award for Best Actress for The Morning Show.

For Pitt, it’s been a time of complete reinvention, and in the end, his campaign was incredibly successful.

After taking home every other major award for his role in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, the actor took home his very first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards yesterday.

In his speech, Pitt grew emotional, reflecting on his decades-long acting career.

“I’m a bit gobsmacked. I’m not one to look back, but this has made me do so,” he said.

“I think of my folks taking me to the drive-in to see Butch & Sundance, and loading up my car and moving out here, and Geena [Davis] and Ridley [Scott] giving me my first shot, to all the wonderful people I’ve met along the way, to stand here now. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, ain’t that the truth,” he continued.

“This is for my kids who colour everything I do, I adore you. Thank you.”

Along the way, however, Pitt’s meticulously engineered Oscars campaign has garnered more than just a slew of awards.

In fact, everything from those hilarious acceptance speeches to that Jennifer Aniston backstage ‘moment’ have completely changed the public perception around Brad Pitt.

After a life of scrutiny and months of personal turmoil, a few small moments of public redemption have completely altered the 56-year-old actor’s image.

And within mere months, Brad Pitt has become the good guy.

A little over six months ago, reports emerged that Pitt had little to do with his six children from his marriage to Angelina Jolie.

After finalising his divorce from Jolie in April 2019, a video emerged in September in which their eldest son, Maddox, said he didn’t think his dad would visit him at college in South Korea.

When asked about whether his relationship with Pitt was over, Maddox shrugged, adding: “Whatever happens, happens”.

The video emerged several years after Pitt was under investigation for alleged physical abuse following a confrontation with Maddox, now 18 years old, on the family’s private plane.

According to reports at the time, Pitt and Jolie were arguing when Maddox reportedly intervened to defend his mother.

The TMZ report read: "Here's what's alleged – shortly after the plane took off, Brad and Angelina began arguing and Maddox jumped up to verbally defend his mom. We’re told Brad then lunged at the boy and Angelina jumped in between them to block her husband. Brad connected in some fashion with his son."

A number of sources also claimed that Pitt's drinking caused the fight to escalate.

In the end, the case against Pitt was closed and no charges were pursued.

The incident did, however, lead to Pitt and Jolie's bitter and lengthy divorce.

In late 2016, Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt and sole custody of their six children, which Pitt responded to by requesting joint custody of their kids.

From there, amid court claims the actor had failed to pay child support, it would take years before the couple's divorce was finalised.

With his Oscars campaign, however, Pitt seemingly erased the past few years of public vitriol, emerging in what has been described by many as his 'third act'.

As Page Six reported: "Brad Pitt won the public war waged by Angelina Jolie".

By appearing in photographs alongside his ex-wife, Jennifer Aniston, it helped the public perception to veer towards seeing the sweet and nostalgic side to his relationship with the Friends star, rather than the man who cheated on her and broke her apart.

By joking about his similarities to his Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood character, Cliff Booth, at the SAG Awards, Pitt was seen as self-deprecating and endearing, rather than a recovering alcoholic with a "disastrous personal life".

And by mentioning his children in his Oscars speech – after famously failing to mention them in his Golden Globes speech – it changed the public perception around Pitt's seemingly dysfunctional relationship with his kids.

Interestingly, it took just months for Brad Pitt to regain his 'good guy' persona.

As a source told Page Six: "There’s a lot of love and respect from Hollywood because of his talent and how supportive he has been of others and how easy he is to work with".

"He's a good guy – that will be his legacy," they added.

On the other hand, however, both Aniston and Jolie are still tarred with the same brush. Even decades later.

While Jennifer Aniston was the America's sweetheart who was abandoned, Angelina Jolie was the bad girl who stole Pitt away from a seemingly perfect marriage.

It really says something about Hollywood, doesn't it?
