Why Boy George hung up during an interview with an Australian journalist.

Boy George cut short an interview with ABC Radio journalist, Fran Kelly, on Monday after she asked him whether his “gender-bending” affected children in the 1980s.

During the interview, Boy George spoke at length about his career before Kelly asked him about his “look” in the 1980s.

The veteran journalist claimed he was a “sensation” because of “your makeup, your clothes, your outragousness”.

“I don’t remember if you were openly gay back then but, like David Bowie before you, you were certainly celebrated for being ‘gender-bending’. You were a ‘gender bender’,” she said.

“You keep referring to me in past context and we’re actually talking in real time," George responded.

“Yes,” Kelly replied, “But maybe now times have moved on and the gender bending is not such a surprise, but back then it was. Were you aware of the impact of that on kids?”

The star paused for a few seconds before saying: "You’re boring me, goodbye". He then hung up the phone.

Kelly continued on with the show after the hang up, while some listeners defended her on Twitter.

Very sad that @BoyGeorge hung up on @frankelly08 just now on ABC RN. He was such a strong influence on me back in the 80s. I was loving the interview until he did that. Fran, I was looking forward to his answer to a great question. He's usually so articulate. Hope he apologises.

You clearly pointed out that she kept referring to you in the past tense. She wasn't listening, but rather waiting to speak! That should be the story and not that you hung up!
