'The movie that made me laugh so much... I may have peed a little.'

We need to talk about Blockers.

It is, quite frankly, the funniest movie I have watched in years.

When I first heard there was going to be a movie about parents c*ckblocking their daughters from losing their virginity on prom night, I was conflicted.

On one hand, Seth Rogen was making it and that funny guy from The Mindy Project (Ike Barinholtz) was going to be in it.

But on the other hand, I thought I owed it to the sisterhood to be a lil’ bit horrified. I mean, they would never make a movie about parents trying to stop their sons from losing their virginity, would they? They only make movies about teen boys sexually assaulting home-baked pies.

Blockers is one of the funniest movies I’ve watched in years. Post continues.

Anyhoo, I burnt my bra and then watched the movie and then had to go to Big W and buy a new bra and pretend the whole bra-burning incident never happened.

Because this movie is motherflippin’ hilarious.

It’s thigh-slapping, elbow your friend, wipe tears from your eyes, and maybe a pee just a lil’ bit, funny.

Basically, the movie centres around three high school students – Julie, Kayla and Sam – who make a pact to lose their virginity on prom night.

Julie (Kathryn Newton) is in a long term relationship with her high school sweetheart. Kayla (Geraldine Viswanathan) decides to hook up with her lab partner. And Sam (Gideon Adlon) plans to do the deed with her dweeby prom date.

Their pact doesn’t exactly go to plan when their parents find out about it and set out to, well, c*ckblock them.

Of course, the path to c*ckblocking and losing your virginity never runs smoothly, and the kids and the parents get up to all sorts of high jinks in the pursuit of peen in vagina.

The parents, played by Leslie Mann, John Cena, and my mate Ike Barinholtz, are goofy, likeable and just ridiculous enough.

Most importantly, they’re not cookie-cutter parents.

One’s a clingy single mum, another is an over-controlling dad, and the other is a misunderstood, somewhat estranged, single dad.

The girls also break the mould.

First of all, they actually look like teenage girls… and act like them. And they’re complex, interesting characters who don’t just squeal and drink beer from red plastic cups or serve to move the storyline along for the male characters.

Each of their stories is different and they all figure out who they really are and what they really want as the movie progresses. They realise they’re in charge of their bodies and they get to choose what the heck they do with them.

The parents and the kids learn a lot about themselves and each other through one drunken, debaucherous, d*ckblocking night.

There’s also a lot of poo, penis and vagina jokes, which is important.

Blockers is the kind of movie that will make you laugh and then make you think ‘holy sh*t, that was actually quite deep’.

And ultimately, it won’t make you want to burn your bra. Well, hopefully.

Blockers is screening in Australian cinemas from Thursday 29 March.
