Sneakers have been through many fashionable evolutions over the past few years.

Like, way too many to keep up with, unless your athleisure budget happens to be unlimited.

Old-school white "dad" sneakers gave way to brightly coloured suede styles, then we embraced the quiet luxury aesthetic in neutral tones like chocolate brown and beige.

Low-profile and metallic trainers entered the chat, as did the trend for personalising your laces with ribbons and embellishments.

We've even seen animal print styles in ponyhair and snakeskin have a moment.

But according to sources, sneakers are about to trend in yet another direction. And it makes a lot of sense.

Content creator Cassidy Crockett, who publishes the Cool Monolouge newsletter on Substack, is a bit of an oracle when it comes to what fashionable people are wearing on her native streets of New York.

In a recent reel posted to her popular Instagram page, she called out a few key styles she's seeing the "cool mums" of NYC wearing lately.

And the next "it" sneaker she's predicting has been hiding in plain sight.

"I definitely think Asics [are] the sneaker of 2026," the fashion commentator shared.

Japanese sportswear brand Asics has been around since the 1950s, but is yet to experience the kind of glow-up we've seen happen to Adidas, Salomon, Puma and New Balance. So early adopters take note.

The style Crockett specifically called out is the Asics x Finesse Gel Cumulus 16 in the colour 'desert rose' — which features a cream base with shiny black detailing and baby pink accents.

"I've been seeing a lot of cool mums wearing these to drop-off, just with a pair of leggings and an oversized coat. Maybe they're coming from Pilates," Crockett shared.

It's not just New York mums though; arguably one of Sydney's coolest mums Jackie Pettitt is wearing them, too.

The design is a collaboration with leading Australian women's sneaker boutique Finesse, and if you want a pair you'll have to pay top dollar — the style is so in-demand it's become a collector's item, selling out across the world.

The other sneaker Crockett mentioned is a monochrome design that Adidas created in partnership with buzzy brand Wales Bonner.

The Karintha Lo Satin Sneaker features a unique scrunched design with a low profile, finished in black satin with crocheted white laces.

While these two particular designs might be out of reach, the big takeaway is this:
