'Allow me to convince you these comfy shoes should not be confined to the house.'

We've all been there. Standing at our wardrobes, eyeing our comfy UGG boots and wishing we could just... wear them outside. Like, not just for a quick dash to the bin or to pick up a coffee, but actually wear them. As part of a real outfit. In public.

Well, friends, that time has come.

I have been seeing impossibly cool girls appear in my algorithm wearing UGG boots outside the house. Not just to the shops, but to brunch, to bars, and even to work. Naturally, I had to give it a go and see if I could pull it off.

Watch: my one-legged jean experiment. Post continues below.

The Great UGG Experiment Day 1.

The rookie mistake: they arrived at work, so I wasn't prepared.

I didn't have my fiercest look on. My hair was in a messy pony. I was already wearing an 'elevated tracksuit pant' so the whole look was a little underdone.

Mamamia's Nothing To Wear host Leigh Campbell pulled me aside and had some stern truths.

She said, "If you're going to do this, you need to do it properly. Your hair needs to be done, makeup and the rest of your outfit needs to be put together so it looks intentional, not like you are heading out for a coffee and happen to be wearing UGG boots."

And she swiftly sent me some Pinterest looks. When Leigh tells us something, we listen.

The Great UGG Experiment Day 2.

I was advised by the Gen Z's at Mamamia I needed to wear socks with them, always. So that was on the agenda. Better hygiene, I feel too.

Finding my footing, I went for a wide-leg jean and an oversized blazer. In this look I felt more 'intentional' and one thing I noticed was that I wasn't feeling cold in the office.

Usually I am draped in an (emotional support) blanket like a cape. Because I feel the cold. But I hadn't reached for my trusted blanky since donning my trusted wooly UGGs.

Was this my problem all along? My feet are too cold.

One drawback of day 2 was that it was raining. I couldn't wear them home on the bus because they are not the best for wet weather conditions.

The Great UGG Experiment Day 3.

I went all out and paired them with a silk jumpsuit. I was really hitting my strides by this point.

Also, the compliments were rolling in. They have a little platform, so they give some extra height, genius. I had work drinks and a dinner that night and I committed to the bit. I wore them to drinks, dinner and karaoke. And I actually think I pulled this off and my feet were snug as a bug.

Turns out, having cozy feet while everyone else is dying in their uncomfortable heels is quite the power move.

The Great UGG Experiment Day 4.

Getting brave, I wanted to try a more cropped pant option. I was really in the swing of #UGGlife by now and wanted to show more of them off.

I paired them with an on-trend blue and white striped shirt and cinched it together with a black belt with a gold accent. You can't *not* look put together when you bring the fit together with a belt.

The Great UGG Experiment Day 5.

The finale, I decided to try this with a skirt and knee-high socks moment, this was the bravest look yet.

There was no escaping or deflecting. I am out in my UGGs. It was a case of oops I (nailed) it again (Britney moment). There's something about the contrast of feminine and cozy that just hits different. Turns out, this might have been my most fashion-forward look yet.

The pros and cons of wearing UGGs outside.

Pros:

  • Unbeatable comfort (like walking on clouds)

  • Actually keep you warm (goodbye, office blanket)

  • Surprisingly versatile when styled intentionally

  • No blisters after a full day of walking

  • You can dance all night without foot pain

Cons:

  • Not great in wet weather

  • Requires more styling effort to look intentional

  • They can get dirty fairly quickly when worn outdoors (make sure you scotch guard prior to outdoor use)

  • Weather needs to be cold or, your feet would overheat.

  • Hard to go back to regular shoes once you've experienced the comfort.

The consensus?

I feel I took on the challenge: Can you wear UGG boots outside the house, to work and out at night? And I passed with flying colours.

The key takeaway is that it's all about intention. If you wear them like they're a deliberate choice rather than like you forgot to change out of your slippers, they actually work. The trick is making the rest of your outfit polished and putting in effort with your hair and makeup to balance the casual footwear.

If you're still on the fence about the trend, just remember this: fashion is cyclical, comfort is eternal, and if you can combine the two, why wouldn't you?
