How does flying affect your skin?

Between cabin pressure, bone-dry air, and long hours in the sky, it's no wonder we arrive at our destination looking like a tired, flaky version of ourselves.

"During flights, our skin can face several challenges due to the unique environment inside an aircraft cabin," said Virgin Australia Perth Cabin Crew Member, Talesha Daniels.

Basically, the pressurisation of the cabin can lead to dehydration, "which can strip the moisture out of the skin leading to dryness, tightness and flakiness".

"This is especially prevalent when travelling on international flights to some of our existing routes, including Bali and Fiji, or our new routes to Europe when the duration of the flights are longer," said Talesha.

How to prep your skin for a flight.

It's like the saying goes, the uglier you go to bed the hotter you will wake up. In this case, good skin starts before you're even buckled in.

Talesha's pre-flight routine is simple but effective:

  1. Cleanse with a hydrating face wash.

  1. Apply a hydrating toner for that extra moisture boost.

  1. Layer on a Hyaluronic face serum and eye cream.

  1. Moisturise. Moisturise. Moisturise.

  1. Finish strong with a tinted SPF, a hydrating mist, and a lip sleeping mask.

"By following this routine, I ensure my skin stays hydrated, protected and glowing in preparation for a flight," said the flight attendant.

How to take care of your skin while flying

OK, so we've set out skin up for success pre-flight. But what about while we're in the air? How do we keep our complexion glowing?

The answer is simple: Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. And we don't just mean with water bottles (although those are key).

"It is important to hydrate internally by drinking plenty of water regularly during flights," said Talesha.

"I also recommend using a rich moisturiser and applying a hydrating mist throughout the flight."

Her skincare suggestions are as follows:

  • Gentle, hydrating cleanser.

  • SPF (yes, you need it even up there!).

  • Rich moisturiser and moisturising lip balm.

  • Face mist (it's your in-flight BFF).

  • Eye cream.

  • Hand cream.

Oh, and we're supposed to skip the booze and coffee — it'll only make us more dehydrated.

If you're like me, you might not feel like doing your entire skincare routine en route (particularly when there is a line for the bathroom). So I asked the flight attendant for the one step we absolutely shouldn't skip while on board.

"Hydrate with a face mist," she said. "A few quick spritzes throughout the flight can give skin an instant moisture boost. Most importantly, hydrate from the inside by drinking plenty of water throughout the flight."

What makeup to wear while flying.

Keep it lightweight, dewy, and comfortable, says the flight attendant.

"By focusing on hydrating, lightweight products with good longevity, makeup remains fresh, natural and comfortable during air travel," she added. "I prefer to avoid powder formulas and stick with liquid or cream products for a smoother finish."

You don't need to bring your most expensive foundation either. A tinted sunscreen will give you a desired glow and prevent the skin from UV damage.

How to rehydrate your skin after a flight.

Yay! Our skin has survived! But it might need a little ✨ extra love ✨ before we hit the ground running.

"I would recommend keeping a 'touch-up kit' in your bag with items like lip balm, concealer, a compact powder, a hydrating mist and a setting spray for any necessary adjustments after a flight," said Talesha. "As the saying goes, 'touch up before you touch down.'"

Or, sneak in a post-flight skincare routine in the airport bathroom/lounge if time allows.

"I think it's also important to give your skin a break by removing makeup, to let the skin breathe," added the flight attendant. "And as always, drink plenty of water!"

So there you have it — pro tips straight from someone who lives at 30,000 feet.

Whether you're a frequent flyer or just prepping for your next holiday, keeping your skin hydrated and glowing doesn't have to feel like rocket science. Pack those mists, drink your water, and as Talesha says, "touch up before you touch down".
