'I've never had more compliments on my nails than when I got this specific manicure.'

Of all of life's little luxuries, getting my nails done is one of my top priorities.

I'm a toddler mum who works from home, and while I frequently have my hands in a sandpit, covered in texta or something sticky, I find having fresh nails just makes me feel better — and helps my daily outfits to look more polished.

Plus, I used to pick and bite my nails, so having them "done" helps me avoid that little habit.

Mamamia.

Every three weeks or so, I go to the nail salon at my local shopping centre to refresh my BIAB manicure.

I started getting BIAB gel — a popular technique also known as 'builder in a bottle' — about three years ago, on the advice of Mamamia's Lifestyle Editor and beauty expert Amy Clark. Since then, I haven't looked back.

Though I take occasional breaks for nail health, I find it's left my natural nails in decent condition, and they continue to grow well underneath the polish. That's the incentive of opting for BIAB over other options like SNS and acrylics.

There is always a brief moment of hesitation when the nail technician hands me the big bucket of colour swatches. Should I go for something outlandish this time? Maybe a red? A chrome? What's Hailey Bieber doing with her nails this week?

But no. I always settle on the same shade — a glossy, sheer rosy pink that compliments my skin tone. I'd almost call it jelly pink.

The shape: almond, not too long and not too short.

I've been obsessed with this specific mani ever since I first discovered the benefits of a transparent pink polish.

Unlike opaque shades, which are more obvious as your nails grow out, I find sheer pinks are much more subtle — the colour blends into the cuticles, giving you more longevity.

(Obviously everyone's nail beds have a slightly different tone, and you can tweak your shade to suit, but for me, a natural pink is a safe bet to extend the life of your manicure.)

Occasionally I do opt for darker rosy pink shade, which also goes with everything.

It's got that barely-there effect, but I find it looks chicer and less expected than your classic pastel tones.

When I shared a pic of my latest mani on Instagram recently, 22 women DM'd me to ask for the details.

("What polish is this?" "Deets on your nails PLEASE.")

That's gotta be a record number of people interested in my fingernails.

Keen to try it out for yourself? Chelsea Bagan, founder of Melbourne salon Trophy Wife (yes, the one in the Melbourne MECCA Bourke Street store!), told us what to ask for at your next nail appointment.

The Melbourne-based manicurist said you can achieve a similar look with the following BIAB polish options.

"Ask your nail tech to ensure they do the base coat clear rather than tinted, to have it appear more sheer," she adds.
