LEIGH CAMPBELL: 'Yes, you need a setting spray. Here are 5 of the best.'

Do you use a setting spray as the last step of your makeup?

I know, I know. Primer, corrector, powder, setting spray… there's just. so. many. steps.

I don't always use a primer, but I never skip a setting mist. A good setting spray will make your base look soooo much better.

Sure, some are like a spritz of hairspray on your face, but they're not the ones I'm talking about. When you find the right setting mist for your skin type, it'll change your whole life (okay, maybe just your face, but that's still a win).

Mamamia contributor Juna Xu wrote a story this week in which she admitted that she thought setting sprays were a waste of time… until she found one that worked for her, and now she's a convert. The best bit? It's 26 bucks.

The key to working out which is right for you is knowing what you want it to do. Lock your makeup in place? Minimise the look of pores? Give you a radiant glow? Mists can make you matte, dewy, or somewhere in between.

Here's a few I really rate.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Dewy Set Setting Spray, $50.

This is essentially glow in a bottle. Despite the packaging, it doesn't contain any shimmer or sparkle, instead it offers a big burst of hydration to 'reawaken' your makeup. For that reason, it's ace for refreshing throughout the day, or to give you a juicy base before you apply your makeup.

NYX Professional Makeup Plump Finish Setting Spray, $18.99.

I love this mist. It's affordable and thanks to the formula's electrolytes, aloe and coconut water, it truly does seem to plump my skin and make me look more youthful. NYX also offers a matte and dewy version, both of which are worth exploring.

This clever mist minimises the look of pores for a diffused finish. It's long-lasting and while it's great at controlling shine, it still offers hydration, so your base doesn't look dry or settle in creases.

L'Oréal Paris Infallible Setting Spray, $29.99.

If the goal is to fix your face in place and not have to worry about touch-ups, this one is for you. It promises zero transfer for 36 hours (but please don't wear your makeup for that long!), so it's great for humid weather, wearing white or when you'll be hugging lots of people.

Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray, $31.

This setting spray is a bonafide best seller because it pretty much works on everyone. I like to think of it as the 'Paris' filter but IRL — it unifies all the layers of makeup underneath so you'll look like a pro did your makeup.
