reality tv

A very important ranking of every real estate reality show.

There are a few TV genres that feel like a free vacation.

Whether it's a cooking show based on the Amalfi Coast or a travel series set in Mozambique, these are the shows to put on when you're in need of an escape.

But for me, I like to watch shows about houses I will never afford with a healthy splash of office drama.

Real estate reality shows are booming right now with a new one seemingly popping up every second month. Now, I'm not talking about fixer-uppers or flipping shows, but just programs about buying and selling houses.

Because I don't need the stress of renovations, I need to see 60-metre infinity pools and TVs that spring out of the floor.

But what real estate reality show rules them all? If you're a fan (like me, obvy), you'll know that not all of these programs are created equally. It's time to rank 'em.

10. Buying London.

Buying London follows Daniel Daggers (aka Mr. Super Prime) and his luxury real estate team at DDRE Global as they navigate London's high-end property market.

The cast includes ambitious agents Lauren, Rasa, Rosi, and Reme, alongside interior designer Juliana.

Despite Netflix's ambitions, the show received mixed reviews: it lacked any believable chemistry between the agents and the drama felt forced and disingenuous.

But I will shout out the historic homes that were showcased — it was a refreshing change from the modern houses most often seen on other reality shows. Alas, the show was cancelled after the first season.

9. Owning Manhattan.

Owning Manhattan follows real estate mogul and Million Dollar Listing alum, Ryan Serhant, and his brokerage team in New York City. The show featured luxurious Manhattan properties and over-confident agents, but the cast lacked any real star power.

Luckily, the show was salvaged by the presence of Serhant, who continued to be effortlessly charming, cheeky and TV gold. Owning Manhattan has since been renewed for Season 2 on Netflix.

8. Selling Tampa.

A spin-off of Selling Sunset on Netflix, Selling Tampa followed the all-female, Black-owned Allure Realty, led by military veteran Sharelle Rosado, as they navigated Tampa's luxury waterfront real estate market.

The cast includes eight ambitious women, including top performers Anne-Sophie Petit-Frere and Colony Reeves.

For a first season, this show was actually pretty good, and it showed potential for the characters to grow, but it was axed by Netflix after just one season. Rude tbh.

7. Luxe Listings Sydney.

Australia, represent!

Luxe Listings Sydney was an Australian reality series following elite real estate agents in Sydney's competitive luxury property market.

The show features main cast members D'Leanne Lewis, Gavin Rubinstein, Simon Cohen, and later addition Monika Tu as they navigate multi-million dollar deals.

The series premiered on Amazon Prime in July 2021 and ran for three seasons, becoming one of Prime Video's highest-viewed Australian originals.

Don't sleep on this show, it's extremely watchable. Sure, it probably needed a few more seasons to find its feet, but it was extremely fun viewing (plus the exorbitant Sydney market made the overseas houses look like steals).

6. House Hunters International.

House Hunters International is my guilty pleasure, and I mean that in the way the phrase was intended, because I feel guilty every time I watch it.

It's not a particularly groundbreaking concept: the show features potential buyers viewing three properties in foreign locations with local real estate agents. But I find it so damn comforting.

House Hunters International launched in 2006, and follows individuals and families searching for homes abroad. Hosted by narrators including Suzanne Whang and Andromeda Dunker, the series has produced over 2,700 episodes.

5. Buying Beverly Hills.

Selling Sunset clearly set the stage for this Netflix series. Buying Beverly Hills surrounds Mauricio Umansky and his luxury real estate brokerage, The Agency, in Beverly Hills.

The show features Umansky's daughters, Farrah Brittany and Alexia Umansky, and the occasional cameo by Umansky's wife, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Kyle Richards, who has been separated from her husband since 2023.

Given this recent drama, the series has become quite a fascinating watch. Season 1 was a bit of a snore, but in Season 2, the show hit its stride.

4. Selling The OC.

Another spin-off, but this one has been remarkably more successful. Selling The OC follows the drama-filled lives of real estate agents at the Oppenheim Group's Orange County office.

The Netflix reality series features four Alexandras (not kidding), Tyler Stanaland, Brandi Marshall and Sean Palmieri, as they navigate high-stakes property deals while getting into screaming fights in pools.

Compared to Selling Sunset, the houses featured in the seaside city are often far more grand and expansive, plus having men in the mix does offer a new layer to the dynamic, as one will-they-won't-they love story dominates the show.

3. A Place In The Sun.

File this one under shows you watch with your mum, or more specifically, my mum (who is English).

A Place in the Sun is a long-running British series that helps house hunters find their dream properties abroad, primarily in sunny European locations like the coast of Spain or the South of France.

The show has aired 41 seasons across various spin-offs since September 2000, with 1,047 total episodes. Each episode follows a British couple viewing a few properties within their budget while receiving some insights from the presenter.

I adore this show. It might be drama-free (for the most part) but it's the TV equivalent of a cool breeze on a hot summer's day.

2. Million Dollar Listing.

This is arguably the show that started it all and for good reason.

Million Dollar Listing is a reality TV franchise that follows luxury real estate agents selling high-end properties. The series began in Los Angeles in 2006, later expanding to the wildly popular (and better imho) New York iteration in 2012.

The Los Angeles version featured Josh Flagg, Josh Altman, and Tracy Tutor while New York made stars of Fredrik Eklund and Ryan Serhant.

A few spin-offs were commissioned, like Million Dollar Listing Miami and Million Dollar Listing San Francisco, but they failed to last beyond one season. Stick to the New York version, which is carried by the quirky charm of Fredrik and the delusions of Ryan.

  1. Selling Sunset.

If you come for the queens, you best not miss! Selling Sunset changed the real estate reality game.

The long-running Netflix series follows the glamorous real estate agents at The Oppenheim Group in Los Angeles, where drama and luxurious properties collide. Led by twin brothers Jason and Brett Oppenheim, the all-female team of agents are TV gold.

The main character is former soap star, Chrishell Stause, but it's a team effort with Mary Bonnet, Emma Hernan, Amanza Smith and Chelsea Lazkani all pitching in, along with the unforgettable villain Christine Quinn, who has since departed the series.

Aside from the twin brothers, casting almost solely women has a lot to do with the show's breakout success. It's just as dramatic as scripted reality shows like The Hills (and has the same creator, Adam DiVello) but set against the backdrop of some of the world's most luxurious houses. It's a perfect combo and my God, it works.
