I need to confess something.
While my entire job revolves around shopping, I'm actually quite hesitant to part with my money.
I can spend an entire day window shopping and leave with nothing, satisfied with quite literally just browsing.
I like to think my frugal nature makes me more discerning. It's important to try on pieces and get a feel for the trends, but the experience of "going to the shops" doesn't necessarily have to be about acquiring new clothes.
Watch: The truth about sale shopping (and how to avoid shopping regret). Post continues below.
You know those mugs and bumper stickers that say "shopping is my cardio"? Cringe, but on some level, I can relate.
Now, my partner has the complete opposite approach; he ONLY visits a store if he needs a specific thing. Like new jeans, undies or a… fishing rod.
Both tactics have their merits, but I think browsing is underrated. It's field work — think of it as doing the research and gathering data that will help inform your future purchases.
How's that for justification?
As many fashion experts will agree, it's always better to sit on a purchase for at least 24 hours (and ideally a week or two) to know if it's something you genuinely need, or if you were just caught up in the thrill of a shopping-induced dopamine hit.
When I actually pull the trigger and buy an item, it means something.
If you're invested enough in me psychoanalysing my spending habits thus far, then read on to see the five pieces I've taken home recently — and why they were worth it.
