I need to confess something.

While my entire job revolves around shopping, I'm actually quite hesitant to part with my money.

I can spend an entire day window shopping and leave with nothing, satisfied with quite literally just browsing.

I like to think my frugal nature makes me more discerning. It's important to try on pieces and get a feel for the trends, but the experience of "going to the shops" doesn't necessarily have to be about acquiring new clothes.

You know those mugs and bumper stickers that say "shopping is my cardio"? Cringe, but on some level, I can relate.

Now, my partner has the complete opposite approach; he ONLY visits a store if he needs a specific thing. Like new jeans, undies or a… fishing rod.

Both tactics have their merits, but I think browsing is underrated. It's field work — think of it as doing the research and gathering data that will help inform your future purchases.

How's that for justification?

As many fashion experts will agree, it's always better to sit on a purchase for at least 24 hours (and ideally a week or two) to know if it's something you genuinely need, or if you were just caught up in the thrill of a shopping-induced dopamine hit.

When I actually pull the trigger and buy an item, it means something.

If you're invested enough in me psychoanalysing my spending habits thus far, then read on to see the five pieces I've taken home recently — and why they were worth it.

I started writing about the emerging trend for 'fashion flip-flops' back in October 2024, and have provided multiple takes on the style since then, including my thoughts on The Row's controversial 1200 rubber pair (ridiculous) and the jelly thongs that legitimately got me through a trip to Europe.

But it really did feel like my shoe wardrobe had a missing piece. I was looking for flats I could slip on with any outfit, from casual looks to evening wear, and feel polished in a cool way.

After lots of searching, I landed on a style by one of my favourite footwear brands, Alias Mae.

The label is known for their chunky "footbed" sandals, which I've always lived in throughout the year. Their shoes are well made in high quality leather, and their more streamlined thong designs met the brief of the silhouette I was searching for.

I invested in the Charlize style in black leather. So far, I have no regrets. They sit next to the front door and they're on constant rotation.

Lululemon Align Tights.

These tights are my Roman Empire.

I have had the same pair of navy Align leggings for eight years and they continue to withstand multiple weekly workouts and constant wash cycles, the quality really is that good. They also feel like you're wearing air; the buttery fabric is that comfortable.

So obviously I felt another pair was justified. I decided on chocolate brown because duh, it's the colour that goes with everything, and it makes my activewear look that little bit more sleek and chic.

If I can sell you on anything, it's a pair of these leggings. Lululemon also offers an extended size range.

Madewell crossbody bag.

When we talk about clothing and items fulfilling an actual need, this handbag fits into that category.

I required a little crossbody bag I could use every day as a mum running errands and constantly darting from park to cafe to car (if you know, you know.)

I loved buying myself this bag from American brand Madewell because I took the time to mull over lots of options in a similar size and shape. It also comes with two strap sizes, so it's extra versatile.

It stores all the essentials, but let's be real, the snacks, drink bottles and nappies go in my toddler's backpack.

The chocolate brown leather gives all my casual outfits a much-needed lift, and I like adding bag charms and keyrings to give it some personality.

Unfortunately, the brown shade has sold out, but this two-tone option is available.

Zulu & Zephyr wrap skirt.

I'm a big fan of Australian brand Zulu & Zephyr, but most of the time I lust after their items from afar; they're on the spendy side.

I took the plunge on this linen wrap skirt because it looked like a really versatile piece for spring-summer styling, and it's certainly held up. I've worn it poolside on holidays over my swimwear, out to dinner with a tank top and heels, and to a wedding afterparty with flats.

The cut is so easy to wear and feels very in-tune with the trends right now, like colourful stripes and wrap shapes, but also quite timeless.

Worth every penny, this one!

Brandy Melville oversized sweater.

Before you cancel me, please know I'm aware of the issues this brand has faced and the very valid commentary on them stocking clothing in "one size".

But this oversized jumper was speaking to me. It's the cosiest cotton knit in an easy slouchy cut, and for $58, it was well within my budget. I can safely say the roomy fit will work for a broad spectrum of sizes.

I have worn it endlessly since making the purchase, from days spent out and about with my toddler to a recent camping trip when an enthusiastic nine-year-old told me she loved my sweater. Brandy Melville's core customer approved!

I'm also wearing it right now as I write this article.

The exact colourway and stripe is not available online, but they have the same style in a navy and white Breton stripe.
