ROADTEST: 'I tried 5 liquid blushes in five days. Here's how I ranked them.'

Many people say Blush is the most important step in your makeup routine.

If you need a flush of colour to lift your base, add blush. 

If you want to look glam for a night out, add blush.

If a 'barely there' makeup look is what you're after, add blush.

In saying that, I've always felt a little intimidated by cream and liquid blush. I always over-apply it and have a bad habit of walking out the door looking like a clown.

Due to the number of cream blush products I've acquired over the last year, I thought it was about time I get over my irrational fear.

I tried a different cream brush every day for during my work week. Here are my honest thoughts, and how I rated each of them.

Day 1: Makeup By Mitchell Blursh in Mango Daiquiri, $30.

I've been obsessively following Mitchell Halliday - the founder of Makeup By Mitchell - on TikTok for months now. But I knew the brand wasn't available in Australia so I just bitterly watched all of his products be applied to skin that wasn't mine. 

Then guess what I found when trying to repurchase my favourite highlighter online? An endless surplus of Makeup By Mitchell products.

Although there weren't many products available, his "Blursh" in the shade Mango Daiquiri was. At first, I was just going to skip on it, but then I recalled Kylie Jenner's 18th birthday video where her makeup artist used orange blush as a base colour to make her cheeks more vibrant. I was convinced. 

Upon application, I was really surprised at how easily the product blended. It's not as pigmented as I thought it would be and it's really buildable.

Overall, the colour doesn't suit me but I stand by the fact it's a great base colour if you want your blush to pop - a pink or deeper shade would look so bright with this layered first. It would look glorious on darker skin, too.

Overall, I'm really satisfied with my purchase - even if that means I won't wear this shade on its own.

Day 2: Makeup By Mitchell Blursh in Toasted Terracotta, $30.

One of the only other shades I could get my hands on was Toasted Terracotta - a really cozy warm colour that sits in between orange and brown. And my goodness, it is beautiful. 

A friend once told me "terracotta is the colour of celebration" and I don't know why, but the sentiment made me want to cry because WOW, YOU'RE SO RIGHT. 

Upon application, the colour looked fun but sensible. And most importantly: really, really, really pretty.

Now, I applied Toasted Terracotta on a particularly bad day. My skin was dry and my go-to makeup routine was failing me. The only saving grace by far was the "Blursh".

I applied yesterday's shade with a stippling brush, but today, I placed the application wand directly onto my cheeks and blended it with a sponge. The results were very natural - so I went in with a second coat. 

If you're looking for a product that's not super pigmented but is buildable and easy to blend, go for any liquid blush by from this brand. 

I use this one on days when I want to celebrate - and boy do I!

Day 3: MCoBeauty Cheek and Lip Tint in Blush Red, $14.

I've had all four shades of the MCoBeauty Cheek and Lip Tint in my makeup drawer for over a year. It's one of the best products I've ever used and it's so affordable. The only con about the shade I used here is that it's quite intense and can be overwhelming to blend in.

Fortunately, I love intense blush. To the point where my housemates will try to wipe away whatever I put on my cheeks before I leave the house for the day. 

I applied this using a classic stippling brush, but for a more natural vibe, I would recommend a fluffy brush with synthetic fibres.

Blush Red is my favourite shade out of them all and I often buy them as little gifts for my friends because they always compliment me about what is on my cheeks.

Day 4: P. Louise Lip Base in Classy, $25.

This is it, guys. The best liquid blush I've ever used in my life - and it's not even technically a blush. 

I stumbled upon the P. Louise Lip Base accidentally. The same way you accidentally meet the love of your life when you stumble into the wrong cafe or something - my love affair with P. Louise is new, intense and special.

Anyway, I bought the Lip Base in the shade Classy - figuring I'd use it for lipstick. But when I got it, I didn't really like how it looked. While rubbing it off with my hands (yes, I'm grubby), I went to scratch my cheek. 

The liquid "blush" found its way onto my face purely by accident and I'll forever be thankful. 

Classy is the perfect blush shade. It blends like a dream. It's pigmented if you apply it directly with a brush or can be softened with a sponge. 

It's everything I didn't realise I wanted in a nifty little tube and I wouldn't be surprised if I died with it in my hands.

Rating: 100/10.

Day 5: E.L.F. Putty Blush in Turks and Caicos, $14.

I have quite a few liquid blushes I haven't tried before and for my very last day, I wanted to go for something I would never really reach for. This is where the E.L.F. Putty Blush in Turks and Caicos comes in. 

Because it's in a pot, this blush is one I wouldn't ever really give a chance. I prefer creams in tubes or with a built-in applicator. 

Because I'd have to apply this with my fingers, I wasn't sure how much to use at first but was really surprised at how pretty it looked after I did. It's more on the natural side which I liked.

I probably won't reach for this as often as my other blush shades. Dipping into a pot is certainly not my favourite method, and the texture isn't the best IMO (it felt very clay-like.)

But, the colour was beautiful, and compliments overflowed with this soft, peachy shade.

Rating: 7/10.
